do bands profit more off merch sold at concerts?
    #17491491 -

I'm curious if its more profitable for the band is people buy merchandise from their shows as opposed to an online webstore or vendor.

Anyone know?

Most pro bands make the majority of their profits through shows - merchandise sold at said shows, and merch sold online or through their various webstores (depends - what kind of contract they have). But yeah most touring artists get most of their money through..... touring and merch and  not actual album sales (where they usually get the shaft, unless they are producing it/selling it themselves OR selling millions..). At least that's been my experience in 8 years of a touring band. We made the most money through shows and selling tshirts.

As for what's more profitable for the band it really depends
If they produce and sell the shirts themselves then its pure profit,
but if they are going through a webstore or another ordering company or something then they probably only get a percentage.
It's usually best to buy the merchandise at the actual show or through the band's website, that way most of the time you are buying it directly from the band and it's going in their pocket.

I suppose so. Live venues are a good way to cut out the middle man (anyone who might run the web shop/retail channel and take a cut from the revenues), especially if you have volunteers (girlfriends, family members) do the sales. Plus, it's much easier to evade tax this way.

They make money off there own brand name. Tshirts and stuff. But they don't make it at the concert itself.

The merchants are private business that rent a place in the stadium and they buy their merchandise from suppliers like everyone else and they resell it to make a profit.

The band make money from the start, they make a percentage off the sale from the factory to the first buyer. But they also have to pay the factory to produce the merchandise

Ah good point, I guess it's different for the bigger bands as opposed to the smaller ones that have to do everything by themselves.

Definitely different for 'big' bands signed to a major label as opposed to the majority of bands.
