First time hunt... can someone help with ID?
    #1743971 - 07/24/03 10:01 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hello guys,
I went on my first shroom hunt this morning after a night of rain and high humidity. I live in central PA and found many shrooms. However, I can not seem to locate any of them in the guide. All the fruit was found growing out of cow dung in pastures. I found probably hundreds of the thin black headed pictured in the middle. I also found some decent size that are pictured on the left. Ant lastly I found a single white shroom which is pictured on top.

Can anyone help me identify these? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

Kegger

I appreciate the help. I will try and describe the two on the left as well as the one on top as best as possible.

The two on the left have a tan cap with brown blemishes. The gills are close together and slightly darker then the cap(brown). The Stem is white and hollow.

The one on top is very simalar to the two on the left with the exception of the cap is a lighter tan, the gills are close and brown. The stem is white and hollow.

If that helps at all let me know.. Again thank-you for you help!

Kegger

LOL... I think I'll stick to looking at pictures for now. I'll move up to spore printing as soon as I have grown my first batch:)

Thanks!

Perhaps you knew this - a spore print is necessary for accurate identification of a mushroom. In most keys, the first thing you need to know is the color of the spores in deposit on white paper.

Happy mushrooming!

another helpful thing to check is how the gills are attached to the stem (if at all) there is a decent diagram w/ some scientific terms here: http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/andes/8046/structure.html this will help you explain what you are seeing. To check the gills, you can cut a specimen in half (cap and stem, and compare w/ the cross section w/ the diagrams. If you have a field guide, these diagrams may be in there too. If not it may be a good idea to print or copy diagrams to take with you into the feild, as by the time you get home, your mushrooms may not be in very good shape for identifying anymore. I use the audobon society field guide and in there the mushrooms are largely separated by gill structure (attached or free), and whether or not it has a veil. What guide are you using?

With a detailed description (size, color, texture, gills, spore color, smell, habitat, etc) the folks in this forum seem to be able to identify just about anything; I'm consistently impressed by the collective mushroom knowledge we've got going in here.
