Ska?
    #17424120 -

Anyone dig ska and want to share some golden oldies?  I only know a very limited amount on the genre.  Reggae I know, dub I know, rocksteady I am getting better with.

Less than jake and the supervillains are my favorite. Also the explosion is pretty good as well.

Is there some sort of delineation categorically between Jamaican ska and white boy ska?

not if you mean white people doing the style of the original ska, but ska defined as the sound starting with bands like the specials is called 2-tone. then even faster stuff starting with bands like the toasters is called third wave. then bands like operation ivy would be ska-punk.

I can dig it.  Most people who know me don't know that I am an old school reggae and ska and rockabilly enthusiast.

Not really what I'd call old school ska, but I used to love Buck O nine.

any mention of ska punk without operation ivy is...i can't think of a harsh-but-diplomatic words that fits so i'm just gonna post their shit:

not every song has ska in it, many are just straight up melodic punk, but over half of the songs on this album at least have ska parts in there, and they pretty much invented their style. required listening. as for other ska punk here are some of my personal favorites that i'm surprised haven't gotten a mention:

choking victim (and all associated bands like leftöver crack)

suicide machines

I got completely burnt out on ska I worked at a venue during the height of its popularity and heard it every Friday for like a year. Saw someone posted a mustard plug video, they played said venue frequently.

YAH MON!

I saw the Skatalites in a small bar by a lake not too long ago. Only two original members left but every band you guys listed up there started with these rude boys! Just blazing horn solos all night to the ska beat. DOPE!

I can imagine. The shows can get quite rowdy too.

Any taste I had for ska was obliterated when the lead guitarist of my band would always try to put a god damn upstroke ska riff in every song we would write. Drove us all fucking nuts. He hasn't played with us in a long time now and im perfectly fine with a 3 piece instrumental section. Old jamaican dub music is still cool though.

i have a lot of love for a certain amount of ska punk but i love the original ska the most by a long shot. btw, the skatalites did at least some backing music for almost all of the old original ska singers like prince buster, desmond dekker, etc. they are true originals and classic. another fun fact, both bob marley & the wailers and lee "scratch" perry began their careers with some classic ska music:

the wailers - go jimmy go

the wailers - rude boy

lee perry - solid as a rock

lee perry - man to man

in the case of bob marley & the wailers in particular, it amazes me that so few people have even heard of this era in their history.
