Listen guys .
  Let's get along.
  I can't see saying much but "good job" . Here's one reason why:

I had this friend. He'd come over and play tapes of himself singing and playing guitar.
His skill and music choices both sucked in so many ways.
Yet, he had one thing I noticed. Drive.
I could see the potential.  I corrected none of his thousand flaws.
I said " great fucking job man!" 
  In trying, he did do a great job.
I didn't lie.
  Its 8 years later and this guy is an amazing musician today.
Positive encouragements.  You can't correct art.

You build up the artist.

I never claimed to be a professional. This is literally my 2nd or 3rd time recording a song. If you need to have a degree in music to 'understand' somebodys music, guess what, YOU are doing it wrong, not the listener. What the fuck is an ameatur anyway? Please explain to me what that is. I don't believe that you make a living, I think you're a dork with a guitar, and I really hope you don't have any students because man they're being ripped the fuck off.

Somebody probably didn't sit there and lie to his face though. Otherwise it would be 8 years later and he would still probably suck.

If someone tells you that you are bad, and you feel the need to get defensive and egotistical about it, you probably aren't that good in the first place. Your skill should speak for itself, and if someone who you think has an invalid opinion tells you your skills are lacking you should be able to brush it off with no problem. People who can't take criticism don't get better, they just sit on the internet and argue about how good they are or aren't.

Although he did basically say

Damn you guys are rude, if I was being rude then I apologize but why would I post a video for someone who said of my first video that "I sound like I'm playing the major scale and making a lot of mistakes" when the recording was played in mostly diminished chords?

That is why I called you an ameatur, because you showed a lack of knowledge in the field. It wasn't an insult. You're in my area (said Seattle right?) and if you want to go professional you'll likely be meeting me face to face, if that happens you'll find that I'm a pretty civil guy  :peace:

As far as understanding goes, I'll paraphrase Miles Davis "It took me 50 years to learn to play like this and you expect to understand in 50min?" We play very different music man, and you're as likely to understand my playing off the bat as learning a language off the bat.

You can insult me all you like, I haven't insulted either of you or at least did not intend to. I ignored you because you were being rude and took you off the list because I figured its always better to end things on a good note.

Anyways I'm out here and if you want to be angry then keep your anger, I don't want it

I really wish you wouldn't have removed your clips.  Honestly, not being able to hear what in the heck is really going on here only reflects poorly upon your position.  Stand by your music man!  I am slightly amused that you quote Miles David, as from what I've read, Miles - while a fantastic musician - was a fucking asshole.  Apparently, the guy couldn't even handle applause from the audience, because in his mind, they were so beneath him due to their lack of musical understanding, that their applause meant nothing.  Talk about a jerk!

But seriously, I genuinely want to hear your music.  If you absolutely refuse to post it here, perhaps you could PM me a link?  I'm not trying to troll you, I just enjoy playing witness to and actor in the creative process.  It's what I live for.

Your Autumn Leaves recording is great man.  One of my best friends, principal in inspiring me to start playing guitar, picked up the mandolin a few years ago and can't get enough of Bach's Cello Suites arranged for the mandolin.  Pretty intense stuff, pretty awesome.  I also see Chris Thile anytime I get the chance.  Got to sit front row to see his Punch Brothers at the Largo here in Los Angeles earlier this year, WOW, what a treat.  Those guys are virtuosos and playful drunken bozos, a great combination for my type of audience experience. :biggrin:

Miles had a reputation, but the point was simple enough. In an ironic conversation I had recently, I played someone: West African music, Rachmaninoff, Dhrupad, Rain Dogs.
He couldn't understand 4 unrelated genres from 4 continents, ancient and new, going so far as refusing to listen to anything I put on the radio. I listen to the rap he puts on for hours without any complaint, but I'm closed minded because when asked I say 'I don't relate to this'.


People are going to think what they want really, if someone doesn't like my music I just won't play for them. Can't win everybody, I'll PM you a link though and hope you like it

Thanks! I just used a youtube backing track with three AAB sections (verses?). I really am honestly still a noob when it comes to mandolin and the guitar, mando I took up 6 months ago and guitar a week and a half ago. I got a waaaaays to go. I don't know if you noticed but I basically played one scale for the whole piece. Man I really need to expand my repertoire. I will though, I just have always wanted to play that piece. It was the first jazz tune I learned and thus far the only one I know... This thread is really making me want to be better. Thanks yall

Right on man! I'm listening to the cello suites now. Fucking awesome, thanks for the recommendation, I will be listening to a lot of this stuff in the near future.
I've only listened to a little bit of Chris's work, but he seems an incredible musician. If he comes around my area I definitely will be in the audience.
More motivation to get better! Thanks for the positive comment.

I didn't notice scale simplicity or repetition actually.
Jazz is one of the rare mandolin styles. I play mandolin actually.
Bluegrass & celtic mainly tho.

Keep playing man. If you're this good now, you'll be soaring in the future!
