Black Muddy River
    #1654199 -

When the last rose of summer pricks my finger,
And the hot sun chills me to the bone,
When I can't hear the song for the singer,
And I can't tell my pillow from a stone,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.

When the last bolt of sunshine hits the mountain,
And the stars start to splatter in the sky,
When the moon hits the southwest horizon,
With the scream of an eagle on the fly,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And listen to the ripples as they moan,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.

Black muddy river, roll on forever,
I don't care how deep or wide, if you've got another side,
Roll muddy river, roll muddy river, black muddy river, roll.

When it seems like the night will last forever,
And there's nothing left to do but count the years,
When the strings of my heart begin to sever,
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And dream me a dream of my own,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own, sing me a song of my own.

I used to sing that song when I was a little kid. It was one of those songs that would stick in my head.

My Dad was talking to me not to long ago about what the real meaning was behind the song . He was saying that it had to do with death and the muddy river is what you had to cross over before completing your journey of life.

I guess since Robert Hunter never talks about the meaning of his Lyrics we'll just have to speculate as we do with all his songs!

i remember jerry would smile [at the irony] when the crowd cheered at "When it seems like the [this] night will last forever, . . ."

Yeah youre right about that.  Either my Dad read that somewhere or thats just what song meant to him.  I did say it was "real meaning",  so thats where I was wrong.

Anyways, its one of my favs!

I heard Jerry hated that the crowd thought it meant an all night party rather than interpetiing to something more meaningful... maybe not.. But I seem to remember hearing something like that.

river styx...
the "other shore" of the buddhists...
lotta wide waters to cross...
~
(ex) wife & i were driving somewhere's (with the kids) a couple days after jerry died, & the radio played that song, and we both noticed that salty water was a'runnin' down our cheeks...
so many of hunter's lyrics touch on themes of aging, loss, death, desolation, betrayal... and hope... powerful stuff from the pen of an american poet...

You know what I find kinda weird...at solider feild (7-9-95) there last show, Jerry changed the verse in the beginning in that song from "Black muddy river" to "last muddy river" and it was Jerry's last show...kinda weird..

Really I didn't know that!

It would not surprise me if Jerry knew what was coming, he existed on a different plane of being than the rest of us.
