You have to do most of that shit working in a warehouse as well depending on what you do/where you work.  It gets really cold as many warehouses aren't heated, you lift a lot of heavy shit, you work with box cutters, you work with fork lifts, you get yelled out, you lift heavy boxes, and its a high stress environment.  Laborers also make more money than warehouse workers.  I sure as fuck wouldn't do either job for minimum wage though.  I'd say laborer is probably a bit more work, but they are certainly comparable.

There you go.

Like I said before: I don't have a problem with hard work. I even accept that some lines of work involve certain risks. I do have a problem with employers who drive their employees to the point of exhaustion and bodily harm while never acknowledging the fact that they are human beings.

So all you want is a pat on the back and you'll work until you drop?

W_S, you don't think people worked in Europe once upon a time?

same with georgia, 20F in the rain working with metal and glass, run a saw in
the rain, chaps were provided for the chainsaw but no one wore them even
after one guy cut into his leg. as I recall the boss cant be there to
personally outfit everyone with proper safety equipment when all he had to do
was provide it. one guy brought a circular saw from home, pinned the guard
back so it wasnt in his way, when he had to get 12 stitches he realized it
was a bad idea to pin the guard and set it down before the motor stopped

People in Europe do work, and quite hard in fact. We are however more susceptible to the perceived importance of humane conditions, both at work and in society at large.

There are cultural differences in the care for others between Americans and Europeans that are quite mindblowing to Europeans, and probably pretty puzzling to Americans.

When I would have to cut a whole bunch of rafters I always wedged the guard back.  I also never set the fucking thing down hot because I knew the guard was wedged back.  I did not let my employees do this even though they were covered by comp and I was not.

Europeans are more like the borg and americans are more like the federation.

toss in a few 200 ton presses, shears capable of cutting through 1/2" steel
plate, 460v@200amps, transformers that step that up to several thousand
volts, machines that can drag you in and crush you with no effort and cannot
be operated with guards because that would eliminate their function, saws
that can take your head or arm off in a fraction of a second and having to
lift as much as 300lbs... yeah, that box knife seems so terrible

I lost a shirt to one of those machines because it came untucked and got
pinched between the work and the machine, crushed a finger in another because
I had to move the guard to do something but knowing the cycles of the machine
I fucked up and stuck my finger into a no finger zone

and that's the thing, you knew the dangers and you accepted them just as I know
the dangers involved with a chainsaw with a 5' bar or a table saw and if I
choose not to take the proper safety precautions like not sticking my finger in
the blade then I'm the one to blame for my fuck ups

ORLY?  Let us take the wonderful example of Greek "caring for others" and examine the level of tax cheating that has gone on by just about every single member of the populace.  No, in Europe, as increasingly so in America, you want to force the other to take care of the other.  The bill falls on an increasingly smaller portion of the populace.  There is no accident that jackboots were invented in Europe.

im gonna play devils advocate here...

why is this a problem if they are getting paid at least minimum wage?

shouldnt everyone who is late to work once too often get fired? 65 to 95degF isnt that ridiculous, i used to work at a cub scout summer camp and we'd be doing physical labor from 7am to 10pm in heat up to like 110degF so i dont think its that bad.

the fact that they havent outsourced it to a different country is pretty incredible alone is it not? at least they arent laying everyone off and heading south of the border:shrug:

i bet if you ask most of the people who work there they will say "this place sucks to work at but i sure am glad i have a paying job that is legal and above the table"

Think about walmart for their average permanent or semi permanent worker with a family of four the barely pay enough to get past the poverty threshhold, iv they boosted wages by a couple bucks they would lift 700,000 people above the poverty line and expand the spending power of that many consumers and thus add that much more to the economy to stimulate growth because workers are consumers hence economic growth, at an overall cut into profits of wal-mart of only 1 percent. Simple mathematics that most people fail to take into consideration, would provide huge benefits for the whole of society.

where would that higher wage come from?

likely the consumer so it draws that whole 'lift americans out of poverty'
shit into questions especially since most of america is middle class

I did read the article, 4 pages of it and it was whining bullshit

I have to agree, the article is pretty sparse on objectionable conditions. It sounded to me like she just wasn't trying very hard because she knew she didn't have to keep the job. $11 an hour is not slavery by any stretch.
