Your online-bought dildo depends on slave labor in the US * 2
    #17319469 -

Ok, maybe not slave labor, but literally back-breaking work, > 10 hour days @ $7 to $11/hr in temperatures between 60F and 95F while being held on a (proverbial) leash shorter than an average pet dog...tells me something's rotten in this kingdom.

Read and weep:
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/02/mac-mcclelland-free-online-shipping-warehouses-labor?page=1

In case TL;DR:
Journalist worked at Amalgamated, one of the major third party logistics provides that handle the distribution of online purchases; i.e. order picking, dispatching; the works. She reports on the experience. Which doesn't make for a very uplifting story.

Labor comes cheap and workers are expendable, so Amalgamated gets away with abysmal conditions. Crappy pay, long hours, the permanent risk of being laid off if you are late for work once too often, even if it's literally just a second. The physical effort required of workers is not dissimilar to that asked from captives in the Nazi labor camps. I'm not even exaggerating that much when I say this.

The entire story breathes the atmosphere of 1920s factories or today's Vietnamese sweat shops. Yet, this is in the US. This is today. This is, apparently, necessary to get that black rubber cock sent to your home at no cost, providing your order exceeds $25.

Because that's what Amalgamated tells its employees: you guys need to literally bust your backs and waive any possibilities to see your kids (or daylight, for that matter) because the customer wants swift and cheap shipping.

The customer - that's you too Shroomery. Is that what you/we want? The modern equivalent of slave labor? Did we ask for that? Or are we being screwed by Amalgamated (and co) as much as they screw their workers?

Discuss.

im gonna play devils advocate here...

why is this a problem if they are getting paid at least minimum wage?

shouldnt everyone who is late to work once too often get fired? 65 to 95degF isnt that ridiculous, i used to work at a cub scout summer camp and we'd be doing physical labor from 7am to 10pm in heat up to like 110degF so i dont think its that bad.

the fact that they havent outsourced it to a different country is pretty incredible alone is it not? at least they arent laying everyone off and heading south of the border:shrug:

i bet if you ask most of the people who work there they will say "this place sucks to work at but i sure am glad i have a paying job that is legal and above the table"

I have to agree, an employer that expects you to show up on time, do some
work and pays at the end of the week and all the while working in tolerable
conditions doesnt sound all that bad. I mean fuck, I worked in a metal fab
shop where I had to show up as early as 5am and work as late as 6pm and temps
were as low as 10F and as high as 130F. the lead mill was just as bad

if anyone wants the real scoop on what it's like to work at the dildo factory
then Cracula  is the one to ask because he's not some fruity, liberal, 99%er
journalist that expected to sit around in an air conditioned office while the
company executives packed orders

Go this be a troll thread by any chance?

Than again, you cant just sit where you want in a dildo factory. I hope its in their safety booklet. Strong chances of accidental butthurt

really? you ever work in a shop with no heat in the winter time, all concrete
and steel, breaking the ice that formed over the course of the night in the
saw's coolant or on the plasma table, then having to dip your hands into that
icy water to retrieve the parts and the only chance you have to get warm is
when you set yourself on fire after working on a machine that leaks hydraulic
oil and then you have use the torch which lights the wick that was your shirt

yeah... I feel so terrible for that liberal twat that had to work in a heated
warehouse and bend over to pick up items as heavy as books, DVDs and dildos

That sounds like all manufacturing work. I used to work 12 hour days in a plastic extrusion plant where it stayed well over 100 degrees in the summer.

My roommate works manufacturing plastic bags, and it stays around 120 degrees during the summer.

Good job missing the point of the article entirely.

It's not so much about the work itself as it is:

Quote:
"Do you think this job has to be this terrible?" I ask the workamper.

"Oh, no," she says, and makes a face at me like I've asked a stupid question, which I have. As if Amalgamated couldn't bear to lose a fraction of a percent of profits by employing a few more than the absolute minimum of bodies they have to, or by storing the merchandise at halfway ergonomic heights and angles. But that would cost space, and space costs money, and money is not a thing customers could possibly be expected to hand over for this service without huffily taking their business elsewhere. Charging for shipping does cause high abandonment rates of online orders, though it's not clear whether people wouldn't pay a few bucks for shipping, or a bit more for the products, if they were guaranteed that no low-income workers would be tortured or exploited in the handling of their purchases.

I would gladly be a dildo packer instead of die casting zinc.

Pris speaks the truth.

If you think that dildo was packed by slave labor,  how do you feel about driving a car?

The guy who changes your oil has a much worse job.

OK, so nobody actually takes the time to read the article.

Let's get some misunderstandings out of the way.

Firstly, this isn't about manufacturing work. Not that it matters too much, but it does show that none of you actually clicked the link, or read my opening post. Even the devil's advocate needs to actually read the files

Secondly, no, this is not about the hours or the fact that people need to show up in time. I have two major problems with the practices at this company that the journalist reports on and has experienced first hand:

1. The targets that are set for the workers are not realistically achievable for most of them. While I understand this can help boost productivity, it also demotivates the workers if they are structurally incapable of meeting their targets. It's like running after that carrot that you'll never get. Except there's no carrot to begin with. Just running. Workers receive negative feedback constantly and are structurally being pushed beyond their physical and emotional limits. This takes us to problem 2:

2. The physical work environment and requirements result in long-term health problems (carpel tunnel being the most benign of them) as well as numerous incidents (electric shocks being a relatively innocent example; lost fingers being more serious).

If you combine the two above with the general work environment, then you see a situation that does not live up to those beautiful ethics that we all believe that we put into practice in our perfect society.

Again, read the article if you want to discuss this.

@propensity: kudos for actually getting the point!

Warehouse work isn't that bad, though doing it for $7.25 is shitty pay.  The day goes by quickly, and its easy to keep busy.  Also, if you are working 10.5 hours a day you must either be getting OT or working 4 days a week.  Its probably lots of OT though cause almost all warehouses are open monday through friday (some on sunday if they ship with USPS.)

I guess I don't get it.

Because it's not manufacturing work it should be a cushy job?

It's unskilled labor for minimum wage.  It should be worse than skilled manufacturing work.

I'm sorry, wasnt the point of the article to say she was working such
terrible conditions for low pay along with quotas to be filled but when the
quotas were not filled she didnt lose her job bu only had to keep saying she
would do better whether she did or didnt

SHE WHINED ABOUT ERGONOMICS BECAUSE SHE HAD TO BEND OVER AND SOMEHOW BELIEVES
THAT IF SOMETHING IS AT GROUND LEVEL AND HAS TO BE PICKED UP THEN IT MUST
VIOLATE OSHA RULES

did you read the part about how her pay was cut to minimum wage because she
walked out without giving a notice, part of the contract she signed, I guess
I dont understand where she's coming from other than trying to push the
fuckbag liberalism bullshit

There are a lot of jobs that can injure you much worse than a lost fingers.

I don't really see the problem here.

If it's that bad they can just quit.

Pris, you either have no clue whatsoever how the human mind works or you just took a stance and you'd rather die than give it up. Since I've been around here for a while, I'd say 80% the latter and 20% the former.

If you tell someone several times a day "you suck, do better!" while they are literally busting their ass, you're not exactly creating an environment that nurtures mental sanity. It's not 'fuckbag liberalism bullshit'. Brains are real. Perhaps you don't have them, but others do, and this is the way they work.
