agoraphobia?
    #1717793 -

hello everyone.
So.......my sis has been suffering from from what, for a better word, agoraphobia...
being scared of pretty much everything might be a better description, but I don't know the proper word for that......social situations, being anywhere away from "home"....aaag, I can't describe it, other than "scared of pretty much everything".
It's been going on for 3 or 4 years now, and it's got to a stage where it's destroying our entire family's lives. We can't go anywhere more than a 20 mile radius of our house without her freaking out...
:nut:
anyway, needed to share, and any advice would be welcome..but sharing was most important....I sometimes feel so alone......
/me goes and feels sorry for myself...

Sorry to be insensitive, but LIKE DUH!;)
It's an avoidance thing, I think, at least to a certain extent.
Whenever she's faced with the prospect of going somewhere she doesn't really want to go, rather than saying "No!" she becomes "ill" and so cant go...

"Sorry to be insensitive, but LIKE DUH!"

well do you have a question or something then?

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

There is a strong link between agoraphobia and panic disorder. Agoraphobia isn't really a fear of the outside world or going out in public,it's more a fear of going out and having a panic attack and losing control. Your sister likely feels more in control at home.

People think that if you just say the word "hallucinations" it explains everything you want it to explain and eventually whatever it is you can't explain will just go away. It's just a word,it doesn't explain anything...

Talk her into being brave and to just go out. Tell her to go out and have a panic attack. Tell her to keep doing this and eventually there'll be a time when she goes out and doesn't have one. The only guaranteed way to overcome a fear is to face it over and over again. Besides medication, I don't know what else can be said on this subject...

so...
we went for a drive today, until she started gagging and had to get out to go for a walk and throw up a bit....
and twitch in a disturbing manner....:(
her "cognitive behavioural psychologist" reckons this is the thing to do...
"Embrace your anxiety" she says.
We'll see....
wish us luck..

That's good she's in cognitive behavioral therapy. She shouldn't be forced to do anything against her own will though (I'm not implying that she is,I'm just saying). CBT is good, but I think some therapists are a little too gung ho. She should take it in small steps, she's likely had this problem for years and it isn't going to be solved overnight. If her problem is that severe, medication might not be such a bad idea.SSRI's might help, but if they don't work, you might need a benzo or something (this shouldn't be taken lightly, obviously.Benzos are addictive and when you doesn't take them, her rebound anxiety will be worse.)
