Want to get into machining, don't know how to start
    #17223254 -

Basically, I want to be able to fabricate things on both a router table and a cnc lathe. Problem is, I have no idea how to get started, short of buying a thousand dollar piece of equipment, used, that may or may not even do what I want it too.

Any idea how to get started as a machinist.

Do you have to get accepted into that college and do all the prereqs? Or can you just show up with some cash and say you want to take a class?

well you have to enroll and junk.

but they dont make you take gen eds, or even 12 hours total.

you literally can show up with cash and ask to take machining/welding

at JCCC they come as a pair.

Yeah cnc machines are really expensive and I don't think you would just want to go out and buy one. Having one machine won't do you much good anyway. You need a range of machines so you can do any job you need. I would go to a community college and get an associates degree honestly. Having only a couple classes won't look good on a resume. Then try to get a job in a machine shop somewhere.

I would apply at local machine shops and ask if there is an apprenticeship program. We only have 1 CNC in my shop but it can do plenty. It`s a 3 axis bridgeport style mill.
I think its worth around 15K used now. Close to 40 when purchased new.

CNC routers and lathes are cool too, it just depends on applications.

I started with no experience and no education, but I had a family friend introduce me. 4 years later I`m running the tool room.

You can learn a lot on the net. Watch youtube videos and read as much as you can.

good luck

Yeah, I'm not looking to be employed as a machinist, just fabricate stuff I need.

You can build a CNC router yourself. There are a lot of sites dedicated to the DIY CNC builder. Kits or plans can be bought to make things cheaper.

Programming is quite easy once you learn the basics. Again you can find freeware programs or torrent licensed ones.

There will be some challenges but worth it if you have the time money and energy.

If that's all you need, there are places online where you can send your CAD drawings and they will do it for you.

I had the same exact question as you about 2 years ago.  If you want to make anything out of any decent quality, you will have to spend some time at it.  It takes a bit of skill to make stuff accurately and speedily.  I would suggest you outsource your work unless you have personal reasons of why you want to learn to machine as well.

I took a lathe turning and machining course at a technical college.  They were open enrollment for anyone who paid the course fee, but enrollment numbers were so low they had to cancel the course a few times until enough people signed up.  For more advanced courses you will usually need to be part of a program.

Hope this helps.

I got quite an idea of what you are looking to make.

:gombypls:

Stay silent about it, I'm sure you will.

Lol - yeah, that's part of it. Few other neat things you can do too.

I would just try to find work at a machine shop and get started that way. My pastor runs a machine/wielding shop and I worked for him for a while when he got really busy, it is definitely a decent job to have.

I knew nothing 3 years ago and now Im a supervisor in a production CNC shop with almost 20 machines, we've got $600,000 mill's, three 2 turret/spindle nakamura lathes with live tooling that are just amazing, a samsung lathe the size of a school bus, even 3d printer, $40,000 lazer engraver, we have lots of toys :P.

Just apply at a local shop though, or take a class at college if you cant get a job without training/experience, but really just get your foot in the door and go from there.

Damn that's nice. I might not even be able to afford a CNC lathe, just a second-hand engine lathe from Craigslist.

The one project I thought I'd need a CNC lathe for I was actually able to do with a palm router, a custom jig, and a large-format printer. Only took an extra 8 hours :P (to be fair, that is assuming I knew how to use the lathe, which I don't)

Well I know a multi millionaire who own's one of the premiere shops in town and he doesnt own any machines himself. Just because your a machinist doesnt mean you need a lathe/mill. And like you said if you dont know what you'd even do with it then just focus on getting in the industry, you can figure the rest out later.
