Serious Dilemma...please help me!!

OK, this is my problem. My straw substrate was supposed to be colonized in about twelve days and it has now been over a month. The mycellium was growing well, and has now covered about 40% of the straw, but growth has been stopped for well over a week. Should I case this even though it isn't fully colonized? I know this is dangerous, but it seems that the mycellium has stopped growing and I don't want what I have to just dry out and get contaminated. Thanks for any suggestions!

Are u giving it enough air?? very important but if so slow or stopping growth could be a contam thats not yet visible.

what do you mean by straw substrate, you said should i just case it.are you using straw to spawn something.maybe i misunderstood.sounds like your using straw in jars or something like you would a grain.i don't think that works rly that good so i've heard.mycelium loves straw and well ripp right through it unless theres a contam in there.

My friend has never had any luck with plain straw. Now straw/dung mix......thats a different story Personally, I'd throw it out and try again.

Thanks for the help. I actually sprayed the non-colonized areas with some water yestertday, figured it was dry too. I am spawning on straw. my bad. It is a stupid kit, which I'll never use again, and cost me a fortune so throwing it out isn't really an option or I would. Any other pointers? Maybe I'll just try casing and see what happens.....

If you want to case a media that isn't fully colonized (which is probably due to contam, maybe water ratio is off) you want to make sure that their is no un-colonized material under your casing layer to attract / nourish contams, and you wanna make suer that you rinse off the growing mycelia with some hydrogen peroxide to kill any nasty spores that may have alighted there. Good Luck! Keep us posted

This sounds like a good idea, thanks for the help. I was thinking of maybe covering the uncolonized areas in salt and the colonized areas in the soil casing...what do you guys think? Any other ideas?

Another questio...the mycelium is growing up the sides of the stupid box that I got with this stupid kit. Before I case should I scrape this mycelium off so none is above the casing layer or what?
