dilemma...
    #1424173 - 04/02/03 09:20 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

ok...

after searching and calling, calling and searching... i was unable to find 1/2 pint jars. however, i was able to get a dozen quart jars.

now, my question is, should i use brf/verm as the substrate with the quart jars, or should i use wbs as the substrate? keeping in mind that i do not own or have access to a pressure cooker. would sterilization by boiling work with wbs? also, i would really rather not fill the quart jars full of brf/verm because im assuming that they will take quite a long time to colonize fully, considering that 1/4 qt. = 1/2 pint, which would make my quart jars 4 times the size of 1/2 pint jars. so would filling the jars only partly with brf/verm work ?

so this is my dilemma... any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated

yes u can fill them up just partially, but if you feel comfortable doing fractional sterilization do that and go with the wbs

Maybe someone should also tell him that if he's trying to go for cakes, he won't be able to get it out of the jar all in one piece since quart jars have smaller mouths than bodies.  Of course WBS intended for casing wouldn't run into this problem.

yes, i know that cakes would not work with quart jars, im definetly going to case.

has anyone had good results with sterilizing wbs quart jars rather than pcing them?

i think ill probably end up just filling the jars halfway with brf/verm, unless its possible to sterilize w/o a pc.

also, do you or do you not need to pc popcorn jars?

I have had bad luck with using WBS with fractional..both...conventional and using microwave.I end up with .Wet Spot; Sour Rot - Bacillus sp. .but that is just my experience..It does work..but I haven't been able to do it right I guess.Have you tried to look for pint jars..? But if you plan on spawning a substrate like BRFV you could do them in quart jars.seeing how you have to break it up anyway.. but with the slower colonization times using BRFV..you may have more of a chance for contams to set in.
