Something Important to nonconformist spiritual practice, not having a Guru
    #17130672 -

some of my basic beliefs: feel free to share yours and we can have some kind of free discussion

i dont use the guru system, intuitively it just feels wrong, dont judge me, everything is divine, i just think guru is kind of a bizarre relationship, its not nessecary to yoga, many times it can be a blockage, we can learn from someone without calling them guru we can honor them without calling them that, i believe it goes against tao, lao tzu for example is not a guru, it just has to do with how energy around a person goes, when you use the guru paradigm, idunno i just know its not for me

its not the fact that people may have been seen as gurus, though thats something to be wary of when dealing with them, sometimes people like that still have some interesting stuff to teach, but the key is not to really make them a guru, but to just see them as being nice enough to have been the channel for that wisdom at that time, but ultimately we must see that all wisdom comes from the Spirit itself which is ultimately impersonal.

i don't mind the term myself but it does seem to have some negative connotation from cults and such. to me, it just means a teacher, but one who can point out the nature of your mind to you. in tibetan buddhism, the outer guru is the teacher but the inner guru is the nature of your mind itself... so it usually takes an outer guru to lead you to the inner guru. but i think a guru can be anything, not necessarily a person - like a book can take the role of a guru for someone if it offers insight for them.

just as it's not a good idea to blindly devote yourself to a guru, i think it's also not a good idea to blindly discredit the idea of a guru either (not saying you're doing this). sometimes the former is done out of insecurity while the latter is done out of pride, though not always. but i think devoting yourself to someone or something can be an exercise in humility and surrender if done right - so the personal guru is just a symbol for the impersonal that they lead one to.

in tibetan buddhism there's great emphasis on guru yoga - which is a very powerful practice of praying/supplicating the guru, making offerings, and merging one's mind with the guru's wisdom mind. ime it's quite a powerful practice.

the goal though is to awaken to the inner guru, not just leave the outer guru outside of you and worship them. the guru is like a stepping stone to your own wisdom, but a very valuable one imo. so i think i agree with your post, just that i don't have a problem with the term guru really. if someone wants to be a guru, or be regarded as one, then i think that's probably a red flag though.

i see what you're saying but to say 'i don't use the guru system' is a this or that mindset.  supposedly it is in our best interest to have a this and that mindset.  you can learn something from most so called gurus, some more than others, but that does not mean you have to signup for the entire 'system', as you put it.  just take what information/knowledge you want from any given teacher and let the rest fall aside.  then just move on with no judgement of what form the information or the messenger took.

Like you said: The only guru is the spirit. It may manifest in a form of a teacher figure in lives of those who need this type of relationship in order to learn best.
I don't seem to be among them either.

It's fine.
