a virgin to the wbs tek, got a few questions
    #1641856 - 06/18/03 09:28 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I've grown a few times with the pf tek, and I want to experience a little more with some advanced mushroom cultivation. Here are my questions:

1. I have heard numerous times to soak the wbs before putting in the quart jars, I gonna soak it for about 10 hours, is that long enough? too long?

2. I will be having a lot of jars, and honestly can't afford the equipment right now for the incubators, what is another way I can keep the jars at the right growth pace without an incubator?

3. Please share any ideas to minimize contaminates

Thanks for the help!

1. soak it for 24 hours.

2. you don't need an incubator. room temperature is fine.

3. make sure you use a filter of some kind on the jar lids (you probably already knew that). i use polyfil. it's cheap, available, and it works.

An Incubater is not that expensive to make.

2 - Walmart Totes - $5.00 a piece
1 - 200 Watt Submersable Heater - $25.00

As well you can make a really good heated grow chamber if you buy another tote and cut a hole and add plexi glass.

Just my 2 cents --

12 hours is usually long enough. Sometimes longer is needed. You can greatly reduce this time by soaking the seeds in warm water.

2. I will be having a lot of jars, and honestly can't afford the equipment right now for the incubators, what is another way I can keep the jars at the right growth pace without an incubator?
Try placing them on top of your water heater. The ambient temp of many water heaters is in the mid-80's. It's wasted heat energy. Might as well use it.

3. Please share any ideas to minimize contaminates.
Don't take short cuts.

With poor results from what I've heard. It's more likely to get contaminated, much more likely.

junebug incubates with a $9.00 walmart heating pad on the top shelf of his closet, its a one of those long bedroom closets with sliding wooden doors so there's still plenty of shelf space no too close to the pad, it keeps things at about a steady 82F

So even if you used tyvek on the lids , soaked for 24 hour, and steam steralized for a hour, youd have a superbly high risk of contams?

you are WRONG.

WBS can be steam sterylized using fractional sterylization. like others said, soak the grain for 12-24 hours before in warm water.

this method actually works very well if followed to the Teee.

If you can't afford a large PC, see about getting a smaller one used for actual cooking. I have one that would only hold about 5-6 PF style jars, but it still would do the job

My friends PC can only hold 4 1/2 pints and not even one quart jar.
