Re: Electro vs. Techno [Re: pwnasaurus]

Im trying to figure out what the diferent genres are so its totally possible that I am off. All i know is that i like the type of music you could picture being played in  a sweaty all night party with lots of drug heads. The type of music you would think people would take stimulants to.

Listen to the mix I posted, that is pure techno.  The REALLY fast stuff (like 150+ BPM) is generally D&B.

If you just want to listen to a few minutes listen to 20-26 minutes, it's my favourite part.

I might get crucified here, but classifying music is so weird to me. There's no exact criteria for what one type of music is compared to another. At least with these crazy sub-genre levels.  To me, it's electronic and that's it.  I mean there's nothing wrong with it, we're just trying to better describe one music from another, but that's all it is is a description.

In the end it is what it is regardless of what you call it.

Well that's ridiculous.  If I'm going out to an event I want to know what kind of music is playing.  I don't want to go to something touted as techno event and hear this:

It makes sense to classify music for a variety of reasons, and techno is significantly different from electro.  Separating techno and tech house is difficult, absolutely, but there a large difference between electro/trance/techno/IDM/etc.

I get it.  It serves a purpose.  I just think it's silly.

Hah I wish.  It's one of the sickest clubs in the world, definitely the best one I've ever been to.

Nothing matches the vibe of that place, not even Ibiza.  Manzone & Strong are the head residents there, and they are fucking unreal.  Mark Oliver is really solid too.

So you'd rather show up at an event and hear music you don't like than classify different broad genres of music?  Of course it gets silly if you get REALLY down on it, like "deep minimal groovy laidback house", but there's enough difference between deep house and electro to define them.

Yeah man i haven't been there. Toronto is a little far for me since i don't have a car. I really wanna get into djing thats why i am working on learning my genres. Any advice? My theory is to just learn what I like and go with that.

Why can't there be some fun electronic clubs in St. Louis?  There's only the occasional show here and there.

IMO it's more important to know what you like and to enjoy what you're doing.  If it sounds good and you're having a good time up there it rubs off on the crowd.

If you have an opportunity you should definitely hit up Guv for an event though, the place is absolutely wild.

Techno and Electro are extremely vague genres, but what you had originally posted I would not consider either:

The song you posted as electro sounds like Electro House -- almost electro, but not pure electro. Confusing yes, but that's how it would be categorized if you were to be downloading it from any site you could legally buy it for the purpose of mixing. I wont post an example, because I do not have any good electro book marked, but it is much funkier.

Techno -- what you posted as techno I would consider to be hardstyle; that's what I have been calling it for years.

This is what would be considered Techno to some people, including myself:

Techno can either be nice and slow like this shit, or way over the top.

And wtf--why the hell is everybody neglecting house music. If we are going to talk EDM, lets not forget HOUSE

This is the type of shit you will find me in warehouses spinning.

OP, I hope you listen to these songs, they are yummy.

it;s somewhat difficult, not to mention vague to classify electronic music.

It can be difficult sometimes, but most of the time it's pretty clean cut, as long as you're not talking about two extremely similar genres like tech house and techno.

First tune is trance (progressive trance), second tune is electro.

You guys are all VERY wrong.

Electro:

Dada Life - Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Original Mix)

Techno:

UMEK - 100% Sure

Electro has distorted synths and usually a break beat.  Techno has very tight compressed synths, and much more subtle drum patterns and layers.

Electro generally falls under the bigger genre of "big room house", and has big build ups and very distinct "drops" and "breakdowns".  Techno builds up much more slowly, constantly adding layers, and there isn't as much contrast between the "drops" and "breakdowns" - in techno/tech house the drums are constantly driving forward.  IMO it's the best music to dance to.

Here's a killer techno mix to give you an idea:

Manzone & Strong - Alive Till Seven
http://soundcloud.com/manzoneandstrong/manzone-strong-alive-till

correct. also, nice mix.

techno...

electro...

but ultimately tech-house is the best
