aphex twin?
portishead?

they are not even electro.
aphex might have some electro tracks
in his early catalog, but hardly.

portishead isnt even close...

stefan - I recommend starting with
Anthony Rother's "Sex with the Machines" EP
http://www.discogs.com/release/30815
and working your way backwards and forwards.
electro has a large history - going back to
the early 80s and going to the present.
you'll get a taste with Rother.

OK, you caught me trying to make stefan listen to portishead.

Why must you ruin all my games?

there is no way to and purpose to genre electronic music.
it a very big family
we should thing all under 'electro' tree i believe
its impossible to genre.

Hey Stefan, check out the amazing work of your fellow Dutchmen at www.globaldarkness.com

Artists that I recommend are Bangkok Impact, Orgue Electronique and Legowelt. They perform around Holland quite a bit so you could check them out live if you're curious about the current electro scene.

Other artists I'm really into right now are Apparat (www.apparat.net) and Richard Devine, who is kind of a bit like Aphex Twin in terms of sheer twistedness.

There's a lot of electro stuff available in real audio on the 3voor12 website,
http://3voor12.vpro.nl/3voor12/archief/index.jsp?showme=dj-sets

I know they have a Bangkok Impact set on there, as well as Aphex Twin and some other stuff.

And definitely check www.cbs.nu like Electrode said, it is the best electronic web radio out there.

*buuuuuzzzzz* wrong care to try again. There is HUGE purpose for genrefication withing the EDM scene. Jungle in no way came from the same roots as house did. IDM has no relation to the trance family, and electro has no kin to hardcore. Sure you could say well everything started from disco, which went to acid, which went to.... But pretty much every MAJOR genre of EDM has its seperate identity and "roots".

If you really, REALLY, want to get to the roots of electro, download Afrikaa Bambataa's "Planet Rock". I havent been involved in the electro scene for two years, check out ulyssee's if they're still around. Great dirty electro from those guys.

Listen to champ! She gives great advice. I've been downloading mix after mix from CBS, and can't imagine life without it.

Have you heard the Electro Classics mixes by X-Bobo? Not exactly the tightest mixes, but he really delivers the classics. It even opens with Herbie Hancock! Then goes right into 'Al-Nafiyash' by Hashim, etc....

I love porthishead, but that's nothing near electro:

Look for:

Miss Kitten & The Hacker, DJ HELL, Felix the House Cat, Chicks on Speed, Anthony Rother, 8 bit rockers, Kraftwerk

Some of that list is debateable.... particularly DJ Hell. The International DeeJay Gigolo's don't really make electro records these days.
