This may be a completely retarded question, but do vultures actually venture into the city? I live in Houston at the moment, and have lived in cities my entire life -- and have never once seen a vulture outside of the zoo. Well this morning I went to take the garbage out (I live in an apartment complex) and near the garbage were 7 of these dudes:



They were grubbing on some trash items. Are vultures actually common in the city? I thought they were only out in the wild and shit.

It startled the shit out of me actually. I came around the corner and BAM, there was a bunch of them just kicking it. Dudes are big as hell, too. I've seen bald eagles and golden eagles in the wild but these were even bigger than them it appeared.

I see them in my suburban neighborhood once in a while, but more often in rural or park areas. The ones here are turkey vultures. New world vultures apparently are not closely related to hawks and eagles, I thought that was interesting.

Yeah it was a very weird, even surreal sight. They backed up when I came to the trash can, not far though, maybe just a few feet. Just waiting for me to finish and leave. They were all just staring at me.

Yeah a week or two ago I saw 6 or 7 of them perched up in a dead tree. Unfortunately the camera on my phone is complete shit, and when I tried to get closer to get a better shot they noticed me and flew away.

Vultures got a bad rep because they are ugly as sin and eat things that would make a pig sick but they are awesome imo...

Yeah, they are among my favorite birds along with crows and ravens. I don't really get people who get excited about spotting random songbirds, but then again I like a lot of plants and trees that many people would not give a second look to.

turkey vultures are pretty common almost everywhere on the west coast. I do see them in cities sometimes.

Just for the record, I think crows are my favorite. They are so personable and intelligent.

My city is much smaller than Houston but I see them pretty much every day here.
