Cliques in the Work Place
    #16906850 -

This is just a little bit of a rant and I'm hoping that I can relate to someone on here.

I am WELL familiar with cliques and exclusion (starting first grade >_<).  It seems like I have always been stuck on the outside in nearly every single situation.  I remember my first job I worked at a fast food joint and I was IMMEDIATELY not invited to the clique that worked there.  As a result, I was always given the shitty ass jobs and had to work harder than everybody else as they would disappear and smoke pot behind the shed or be too drunk to function.  There were so many other people that were hired that quit because they couldn't stand the clique situation there either.

Flash forward to 2012 and I have been hired by a HUGE national factory and I'm thinking, "Yeah, big place, lots of older adults, can't be that bad, right?"  WRONG. So very WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. I'm part of a small working section, like 5 or 6 people only per shift, and two of them are older moms and the other two are mousy, cute-but-not-threateningly-attractive(you know what I mean...don't pretend you don't!!!) girls in their 20s.  I smoke and I drink coffee, both things being something that is looked down upon by this groups' religion (take a guess...I dare you to), so I have been shunned out since day one.

Their clique consists of them and two guys from a different area and they have lunch/break every 2 hours.  They never say hello to me and the only reason I have ever been asked to sit with them is because the project manager - not these girls, but the upper management, invited me over twice: once when there was a company barbecue and the other one for someone's birthday.  I overheard one of the 35 to 40 year-old-something moms talking to a new girl in training that was going to be switching to a different shift, "Oh, that's so and so.  They're great.  And that girl is S_____.  No one really likes her."

Hey, here's a revolutionary idea that everyone should already know as an adult: if you work in close quarters with a few people and someone new comes, once on lunch, say to the newbie, "Hey, want to eat with us?"  If they say no, fine.  After being turned down, just remember to say, "Oh that's alright, you're welcomed to sit here any time you want."  Then go back to your own damn business because after that point, if they feel excluded, it is their own fault.

-_-  Normally, I don't give a flying rats shit because I tend to make my heart black as coal when I'm around strangers nowadays, but today I just erupted in a frenzy of silent dripping rage.

Does anyone else have to put up with crap like this in the workplace?
Have you ever faced a clique situation at work?
You may choose only one
Would you consider yourself in a clique?
You may choose only one
If you find yourself excluded from a clique, is it because...
You may choose only one

I don't have enough work experience to fall in the category you describe, but everywhere I worked, some people got along better than with others, but thats normal in my mind. None of them went to extremes to avoid me or invite me. They acted like adults I guess.

I can totally understand what you mean though. Women are vicious when it comes to cliques and whatnot. Some men can be too. I just haven't been a victim or benefactor of such a clique yet.

The only clique you need to be in is the one your manager is in. Try to join it. Your career depends on it.

I'm head chef at a mom n' pop kitchen. I am the clique.

Nah but really, everyone gets along just well here. We crank up the tunes, and cook away. (And since I'm an awesome boss on the line, I made it "Pick your tunes tuesday!" So everyone on the line (And the dishwasher) Gets to pick what they'd like to listen to on their Tuesday.

this happened at every job i've been at. doesnt bother me too much anymore. At my current assignment for the temp service i work for. I'm usually the only one in the lunchroom during our breaks. Everyone else goes out to smoke and socialize. I guess I see it as its a job so i'm gonna go there and do my work and then leave. If I happen to meet some cool people or make a new friend then so be it.

I'm pretty good at getting along with, and getting on the good side of, almost anybody I work with at any job.  I am kind of chameleon-like and am not abrasive at all, so people tend to be sympathetic towards me and tend to treat me pretty well.  I've never had a job where it was "clique-y" and I was excluded from the clique, though at my last job everybody there joked around with each other more often than they joked around with me, which was rarely.  Maybe it's because I tended to be more serious about things than them and a bit more mature than they were in general, but they didn't include me very much in their "playing around".  I felt kind of left out, for sure, but I understood that it just wasn't supposed to be my group of people to be close to.  They were just coworkers and that was all, our personal relationship mattered little, the only thing that really mattered was how well I did my job every day.
