Would you do this MILF?

Magnetized Inertial Linear Fusion

Nuclear fusion is very close to the point where the amount of energy produced by the system equals or surpasses what's been put in.

Sandia scientists say that magnetically imploded tubes called liners, intended to help produce controlled nuclear fusion at scientific "breakeven energies or better, have functioned successfully in preliminary tests.

It's a key test of a concept called Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF),based on magnetic fields and laser pre-heating.

In the dry-run experiments, cylindrical beryllium liners remained reasonably intact as they were imploded by the huge magnetic field of Sandia's Z machine, the world's most powerful pulsed-power accelerator.

This means they were capable of combining nuclear fuels - deuterium and possibly tritium - to the point of fusing them. Sandia researchers expect to add deuterium in experiments scheduled for 2013.

"The experimental results - the degree to which the imploding liner maintained its cylindrical integrity throughout its implosion - were consistent with results from earlier Sandia computer simulations," says lead researcher Ryan McBride."These predicted MagLIF will exceed scientific break-even."

Simulations have shown that an accelerator generating 60 million amperes or more could reach high-gain fusion conditions, where the fusion energy released exceeds the energy supplied to the fuel by more than 1,000 times.

The liner is intended to contain fusion fuel and push it together in nanoseconds. However, the metallic liner doing the compressing is also being eaten away as it conducts the Z machine's enormous electrical current along its outer surface. It begins to vaporize and turn into plasma, in much the same way as a car fuse vaporizes when a short circuit sends too much current through it.

"The question is, can we start off with a thick enough tube such that we can complete the implosion and burn the fusion fuel before the instability eats its way completely through the liner wall?" says McBride.

While a thicker tube would be more robust, the implosion would be less efficient because Z would have to accelerate more liner mass. A thinner tube could be accelerated to a much higher implosion velocity, but then the instability would rip the liner to shreds.

"Our experiments were designed to test a sweet spot predicted by the simulations where a sufficiently robust liner could implode with a sufficiently high velocity," says Mcbride.

Next year, the team plans to take the next step of integrating in the new magnetic field and laser preheat capabilities that will be required to test the full concept.

"This work is one more step on a long path to possible energy applications," adds Sandia senior manager Mark Herrmann.

What would be the possibilities with a nearly-unlimited energy source?

Military Filth hell ya bend her over rover and let Lunar take over.  Hell I saw a MILF at the dump today she was hot hot hot even better than the super in shape beautiful blonde barbie type in her short shorts and sweet face to boot but the MILF with the wagon and young son was so fine it was divine well that could have been mine if I had the line but no I unloaded my thorny brush and drove away keeping the thoughts of a way to make hay with her in the sunshine.

In the military I used to work on TWATs. (Travelling Wave Amplifier Tubes). At 3 megawatts, they were pretty damned hot.

Yes, but only if you turned them on first.

What would be the possibilities with a nearly-unlimited energy source?

A step toward world peace.

I've said this many times that solving fusion has to come before sending people to Mars. Once we have cheap, unlimited energy, the human trip to Mars would cost less and make more sense than it does not.

The energy from fusion would be clean, cheap, and practically inexhaustible because every molecule of water has two hydrogen atoms. There's almost no radioactive waste, and what there is doesn't stay radioactive for long. Not like uranium fusion waste that takes thousands of years to become safe.

Right now, desalinating sea water for human consumption and agriculture takes enormous energy because you basically have to boil the water until it's all gone, then you re-condense it for use. Imagine how long it would take and how much energy you would be used to boil a big pot of water on a stove. Now imagine a thousand swimming pools which is what a medium sized city would require. The costs in electricity would be enormous.

But with fusion, the energy would be cheap and inexhaustible. The main costs are the maintenance of the infrastructure because the fuel would be almost free. Unlike coal or oil or even uranium fission, getting the fuel out of the ground is expensive. But hydrogen is everywhere, including in water. It's the most abundant element in the universe. About 75% of all the matter in the universe is hydrogen!

So with such a cheap energy source, we could build cities and agricultural centers in the desert and pipe in sea water to be distilled into drinking water and for irrigation. Giant hydroponic greenhouses could be built with air conditioning and heating plus artificial lights because energy costs would be minimal. Imagine turning a desert into a garden. Energy costs for all industries would drop drastically. Solving fusion would be like a second oil boom for the planet. The cheap energy source given us by oil is what ended the Great Depression. Fusion could be our next savior.

Much of the world's conflicts are over oil. Hydrogen fusion would change the balance. Everyone would have plenty of cheap energy. Electric cars would replace oil-burning cars and would be cheap to charge. The possibilities are endless.

Sandia's Z-Machine is pretty awesome to look at. This is a famous picture. Well, it's famous among geeks:

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
