Re: Plastic Storage Lids safe for P-Cooking?

I use the Ball brand plastic storage lids a have used them over and over in my pressure cooker with no problems. I got sick and tire of the rust too, plus with syn. filter discs, you can drill a 1/2" hole to reduce evaporation while allowing spawn to grow. I use 1/2 gal wide mouths now, but i used to use 1/2 pts too. 1/2 gals are so much mor efficient, if your pressure cooker is large enough to hold them. For the 1/2" hole, I use a spade bit and have not had one lid crack, for the 1/2 pt type I use a 3/64 drill bit.

Hey Chester,
where'd u get your 1/2 gal wide-mouths & those white plastic lids (they look better than the blue kind, i prefer screw-on to snap -on). Thanks

Both are from Ball (Alltrista). I had my local hardware store order them in for me. The jars come in a box of 6 for $5.79, they retail for quite a bit higher, somewhere around $11.00 (I think). But I got a deal since I orded 20 cases. The lids were $2.00 a box of 8. Again 20 boxes, that way I had extras when I ship spawn, I don't have to stress on running low. It is much more efficient than qts and blows 1/2 pt away, unless you prefer to deal with cakes. The lids seal air tight (unless you drill holes in them LOL ) I place a pool ball size piece of dry ice in one and sealed the lid, to make sure they would seal as tight as metal bands and lids, and the jar exploded, so good enough for me.
