I saw a 75gallon tank for 200$ (230 without a petsmart card) at petsmart, Glass, not Acrylic.  What do you guys think?  Good deal?

honestly, thats a little too big to start off with, but then again, if you got the money.

do me a favor though... read, read, read!!!!!! its a great hobby! its like owning a little piece of ocean. i just hate seeing people jump into the hobby with no sense of whats going on and start fucking up from the get go. motha fuckin get go. i hate that phrase. get go.... who the fuck came up with that anyway?!

I've been reading don't worry.  :P  I've got a few books on marine aquariums, I don't plan on having this setup with live rock and sand until around October.  Which should give me plenty of time to read and understand the nitrification cycles and other important factors of marine aquariums.  I don't plan on putting fish into it until at least 3 months After I get the live rock and sand going.  Even then I might not have fish in it, probably just going to get corals and a few filterfeeders going.

Yes, the rock will seed the sand. The key is to get a 45lb box from a live supplier that ships it to you straight from Fiji or wherever, it's generally cheaper or the same price as buying from your local fish store(I like my LFSs but they try really hard to make me not like them....I would at first try to buy fish locally until you know what you're doing, rock, doesn't matter, online rock is better anyways).

There is no such thing as "too much bio filtration", however, you can have too much bio filtration for your bio load...this just means that you'll have a bacteria die off because there is not enough poop to sustain the bacteria. If you increase the poop load(with another fish) the bacteria will compensate.

There's a few thoughts. The SPS folks like bare bottom tanks because they're easy to clean and water quality doesn't take a hit because of hidden decaying stuff(because SPS are sensitive to water chemistry).
A big fish predator tank, you can be lazy....and the fish are cool. LPS and softies are kind of in the middle. For any corals you need lights better than weak 20dollar petco lights.

If you really want to know, go to the site I posted. It's about as big as shroomery; but only about saltwater aquariums.

Tank/ Stand - anywhere from 100-400... i could find a great 55g setup with stand and lid for around 150.00.

LR - im actually not sure, when i was in the hobby the avarage price was 2.50/3.00 per pound. shit is pretty expensive.

Filtration - the setup i built wasnt much. 50.00 for the wet/ dry, 30.00 for the overflow, i got the acrylic sump for free, and the skimmer was around 30.00.

Live Sand - dont know the price now, but back then it wasnt shit.

Lights - it all depends on what you go with. id say set a budget and read into different lightening and see what best fits you.

5 gallon bucket of salt - 25.00

soft coral will always be fairly cheap

same with fish, wont be much.

i could honestly setup an AMAZING tank for under 500.00.

As far as DSB goes, it depends, do you just want pretty? Or do you want an active biologically filtering deep sand bed? Two inches is fine for ornamental; but in order to get actual filtration you need it deep because the De-nitrifying bacteria are anaerobic and cant be around oxygen. Most people put a true DSB in a sump or refugium; and are usually deeper than six inches.

I'll admit that for tank/stand/ligthing/filtration you can probably find stuff on Craigslist or whatever for cheaper, I was talking new. GOOD live rock is expensive. The fiji rock I'm talking about is like 7 bucks a pound; but it's cool.
Lol, fish not cheap? A quarantined Australian Tusk is like 160bucks. No need for live sand. I fanyone is seriously thinking about a marine tank, go to the site I've already linked. Shroomery is not where you want advice on this stuff.

I'm sure your 500 dollar tank would be awesome though.

I would think you could probably find the best deal on craigslist. Fish tanks are always for sell on there.

You're making me want to get a freshwater setup in my new apartment. Im thinking fish would be a little easier to care for than a new puppy, although not nearly as much fun

I've been looking at lighting, and found some lED+T5 flourescent fixtures for around 150-200$, but they aren't huge, they're about 24" long, and would work for something like a 55gall tank, but I would need two of them for a 75gal tank.  I'm trying to figure out though if it would be worth the initial investment, because I probably will want to go bigger eventually.

Not really. You will want to go bigger. 24" is a 29gallon tank. There are standard sized tanks, you can look them up. Price isn't linear to size.
Lights really depend on what you want to keep. T5s are fine; but how deep is your tank? See where I'm going with this? Read www.reefcentral.com, there's a whole forum for lighting; and everything else.

Petco has dollar a gallon sales every few months also.

I had a customer 40 breeder tank built with starphire glass.  It was so sexy.  I ran it for about 5 months then moved and it broke when being moved. :frown:  I am now coral and tank less for a while until I rebuild my entire collection.

LED's are the way to go also if you can bite the initial cost.
