Wide Mouth vs. Regular
    #1667525 - 06/27/03 06:03 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

My iguana has 11 Regular Mouth Half pint BRF jars at about 60 percent colonized. Her girlfriend just bought 12 Wide Mouth Half pint jars (shorter and fatter). My iguana knows that they should work, but was wondering if there is an advantage/disadvantage when using Wide Mouth jars? All of her jars are tapered and have no "shoulders". she is just wondering what the differences would be in a short, squat jar and a taller, skinnier jar. Thanks a lot.

You can stack more short jars in a PC if you are tight on space.

Surface area would probably be the only difference. Also if the tall skinny ones aren't tapered it may be a littel hard to flip them and to take them out. My faery godmother's mycelium grew first on the surface and then it grew, whatever that would mean.

Actually the surface area doesn't change much. It's the angle of the slope that would differ...  I agree about the second advice. And if you say they're all tapered, my advice would be.... Why don't you do all?

IM(drunken)HO the surface area of the jar isn't an issue before fruiting, as the surface area to be colonised is that of all the grains of BRF/verm, not the surface area of the jar (which is substantially less).
This is why grains colonise faster than BRF......less surface area to cover.
However when it comes to fruiting only the outside surface area can fruit, so larger surface area is better for cakes (unless you're casing or converting to flat cakes).

However, I could very well be wrong.

The wide mouth jars have the advantage of better moisture consistancy. Gravity brings moisture to the bottom of taller jars. With a wider jar, gravity will still bring moisture to the bottom, but distributes it over a wider area.

Both types of jars will work. The differences are marginal.

Thanks alot everyone. My iguana is going to use them, had planned to all along. She said since she was gonna PC them tomorrow, and was washing them today, she had that thought. She also said she checked her secret spot and her jars at more like 70-75 percent. Except for one, it has very little growth, but she said that was because she forgot to shake the syringe before doing that jar. Maybe it is destiny, one jar takes forever to colonize and fruit, then when there is no shrooms it fruits. Maybe not lol. Thanks Again and keep up the good work.

AFOAF has used both wide mouth, and normal mouth half pint jars, they are both tapered, and the cakes slide out just fine, because they are tapered...
