Re: Dragon Ball Z [Re: SprewellSleeve]

I stopped watching it after I was exposed to the Japanese version. As a kid I wished my mom would buy me all the illegal subtitled copies from a local comic book shop but that never happened and I never ended up watching the series.

Actually, yes. I was really touched by the series and it was incredibly frustrating to only have been exposed to a small part.

Not being able to accomplish big long term goals like getting all those tapes has been a recurring theme in my life.

I downloaded every single season of dragon ball z a year and a half ago and watched em all. Honestly one of my favorite shows. I remember coming home after school everyday and watching it on toonami. Those days cartoon network was great, esp toonami.

Probably gonna watch all the dbzs again soon

What makes the japanese version different from the American one?

Usually the Japanese versions of animes are better while the american dubbed ones are more gear'd towards little kids

Originally the American version was heavily censored; later on they became a little more relaxed and eventually released uncensored versions on tape/DVD. However...

The Japanese voice acting is really the only acceptable thing once you hear it.

The American version changes the music.

Sexual humor is probably still censored to an extent in the American uncensored version. While the American uncensored probably kept all animation cells in tact (so a scene where a woman's butt is grabbed would remain) they probably didn't genuinely translate all the dialog. In the censored version show on TV, lots of little things are removed like all cigarettes, beer, especially sexual scenes like Bulma walking around in skimpy underwear and a t-shirt

In a few instances, entire characters and episodes are removed. For example, in the U.S. Dragon Ball was cancelled and they moved right ahead to DragonBall Z. They took an opportunity to remove an overtly sexual character, a girl named Lunch, because she only appeared a little bit and would only be known from Dragon Ball.

Actually every episode is trimmed because Japan TV time constraints are a few minutes different from America's. The opening of the first episode of DBZ is removed and the first episode is merged with the second episode. This is a recurring thing and the total of the U.S. edited version is 276 episodes vs. 291 for the Japanese version.

Violence, even after they became less restrictive, is drastically reduced (this includes dialog). A trademark of the series is to have characters punching or shooting completely through someone's body and blood gushing out.

Lots of little cultural things are removed. Also like for example in the early episodes when Goku goes to the afterlife, little things that establish it as an afterlife are removed. In the U.S. version they always say a character is being sent to the next dimension, in the Jap version they say dying or frequently, like in battle, going to Hell. In one instance a news crew helicoptyer gets blown up on the side of a fight and then they dub in "oh good I saw thei parachutes" that was fake and dubbbed in

All cursing is removed even in uncensored version, like "hell" and "damn" and "shit". (No japanese word for "fuck", so "fuck does not appear ever")

Nudity is accepted in Japan and when a young character is bathing or something the genitals are seen. In americna version this is completely removed or they digipaint underwear or something.

The replacement of music alone is a big issue because it's cultural sometimes traditional japanese or chinese music done in the mid 80s versus mid 90s cheap american kiddie stuff. Music is also added when in the japanese version it's silence.

covered all the bases pretty much. DBZ and Dragon Ball is cool.

the original (in Japanese of course) is my favorite, though.

WHOA! I knew they were different in some ways, especially when it comes to the sex stuff. But I didnt think there was a major difference in the two versions...that' a lot of episodes to be left out.

Would you say there any major plot holes missing in the american version or is that kept pretty tight?

I've heard that there are a few ridiculous holes in the continuity of the overall plot but I can't say as I've never watched the series.

I also wanted to mention that a character in the Japanese version named Mr. Satan, his name was changed to "Hercule," including in the uncensored American version I believe.

I've only watched the English DBZ, but he was Mr. Satan when I started watching the Buu Saga earlier this year.  He was definitely Hercule back when it was aired on Toonami though.

As far as Bulma naked, there's only a single cell where she appears topless (so you need to pause to actually see it) in Dragon Ball. There are a few scenes where you see her bare ass briefly and other than that there are a bunch of very revealing scenes although nothing direct.

In the manga (comics) however there's a few more instances of direct nudity. One scene in the manga looking in through a window her nipples are exposed, whereas in the anime they added very thin streaks of light on the glass (precisely covering her nipples, they weren't trying to do a good job). I'm only talking about the Japanese version here. The Japanese manga has a little more nudity than the Japanese anime.

Bulma also starts smoking later on in Dragon Ball Z.

Edit: The single topless cell I menbtioned above that you have to popause to see -- this is not in the mnaga as that episode is a filler episode. The anime is significantly longer than the manga because they added a lot of extra episodes to the anime, labeled "filler." The anime is fairly extended, compared to the manga.

I used to love that show!

That clip is great! I remember seeing it for the first time going like "nooooo not fucking Frieza again" and then they get sliced up in seconds.

I have all the episodes sitting on my harddrive but can not get myself to start watching all 300+ again. Like someone said, sometimes it just takes too long, and then he misses the fucking spiritbomb :mad2:
