Osteo-Arthritis
    #16565713 -

I have some wicked arthritis in my knees and hips. Hips are actually collapsed, and my knees suffer cause of that.
Pain meds are a no go...

I was wondering if any one has any tips or tricks to minimize the stiff, inflamed, aching, cracking of joints.

Well respected gels, topical lotions, foods/herbs/mushrooms that might take the edge off

Any little bit of relief will help, weather changes and rain destroy me

Keep moving. Exercise your legs every hour or so.

I do, since I need to change my position often, or I kinda get stuck.
There's a fine line between too much and too little.

All good man, I appreciate it

Its a little different than the typical arthritis, more bone on bone. My hips are basically dead.

Doctors just wanna $cut me open$ (again) or feed me shitty $drugs$. :mad2:

I'm not looking for a cure, just somethin that will take like 1% of the pain away or make things a little less annoying

I move around like a damn action figure

You have to figure out what is causing your inflammation. Something in your diet or environment is wrecking you. I would be willing to give advice but there's a jerk off here who disses everything I try and put out there and he would wreck your thread. I could send you a PM if it's cool. I'm going to be busy most of tomorrow, Hmmm, I mean today  but I'll make it a point to check back in the late afternoon sometime.

Stop eating grains and vegetable oils.

Start eating more healthy animal fats.

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/arthritis-diet/#axzz21Pb53Hjc

Quote:
Ditch the grains, especially wheat: Avoiding grains in all forms – and yes, that includes beer (sadly) – was the single best move I made toward improving my joint function. Gluten intolerance is often connected to arthritis (yeah, avoid the vegan stuff and focus on the gluten avoidance), and Loren Cordain has tons of papers on possible connections between dietary lectins and arthritis (PDF). He focuses on rheumatoid arthritis, but I don’t think osteoarthritis and RA are so different. It’s just that osteoarthritis is assumed to be the “wear-and-tear” disease, but the moose story from last week (and the tale of the corn-fed Native Americans) refutes that.

Avoid excess omega 6 fats: Higher circulating levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a pro-inflammatory cytokine that I’ve mentioned before, are highly significant predictors of osteoarthritis of the knee. Can you guess which type of polyunsaturated fatty acid leads to excessive levels of IL-6? Exactly.

Skip the corn, soybean, canola, and vegetable oil and the resultant pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. Use animal fat, butter, olive oil, and coconut oil instead, and eat plenty of fatty fish or take fish oil.

Avoid potatoes: They’re not the worst things in the world, but some people report joint pain after consuming potatoes. I sometimes get tinges of my old knee pain if I eat potatoes on consecutive days, though the problem seems to worsen if I eat the skins.

Go for more Primal friendly starch sources, like sweet potatoes, yams, and winter squash instead.

Get plenty of sun or supplement with vitamin D: According to several studies, low vitamin D status is linked to increased osteoarthritis.

Use turmeric: Turmeric, specifically curcumin, its active ingredient, appears to protect chondrocytes.

Eat Indian dishes (just make sure ghee is used!).

Consider glucosamine supplements: Art Ayers had an interesting take on glucosamine. Rather than it providing the raw material for cartilage production as it’s commonly assumed, glucosamine actually binds to free transglutaminase 2 (TG2). TG2 is a well-known marker for osteoarthritis severity, and it often binds with gluten, resulting in the formation of pro-inflammatory antibodies. If glucosamine binds with TG2, less TG2 is available to bind with more inflammatory compounds.

Another option is to drink bone broth on a regular basis and gnaw on the articular endpoints of animal bones.

Lift heavy things: In order to support healthy cartilage, your joints must bear weight. PB Fitness is great for that, as is a more traditional barbell approach. Just don’t think biking or swimming is enough; those may be useful for folks with no cartilage at all, but if you want your chondrocytes to do their job, you have to provide the right stimulus, and that means load-bearing exercises. It remains unclear whether cartilage can actually regrow thanks to proper exercise, but we do know that resistance training improves osteoarthritis outcomes.

Either sprint or move slowly: Chronic Cardio increases systemic inflammation and increases your desire for inflammatory, cheap carbs like grains. Try sprinting or hiking instead.

Go barefoot: I’ve gone over this before, but I’ll reiterate. Wearing padded shoes disrupts your natural stride, and going barefoot allows valuable proprioreceptive input so you can intuitively adjust your landing to reduce stress on joints. Walking barefoot has also been shown to reduce loading on lower limb joints in patients with osteoarthritis (PDF).

When you get down to it, avoiding and managing osteoarthritis is pretty simple for your basic Primal eater. Avoid grains and other foods rich in dietary lectins. Reduce inflammation, both acute and systemic. Use anti-inflammatory spices. Get the right amount of exercise at the right intensity. Get some sun. Avoid autoimmune triggers, like gluten (and, for some, potatoes). Consider smart supplementation. Although to my knowledge this hasn’t been mentioned in research, I’d also suggest getting plenty of sleep every night, maintaining strong social bonds with loved ones and friends, and leading a low-stress lifestyle.

It’s pretty clear that the body deals with stressors rather indiscriminately, and a high stress lifestyle (no matter the source) is also an inflammatory one.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

My pain and arthritis is from medication that literally killed my bones... AVN from Dexamethasone.

I'll give these things a try, two different "medical professionals" said there was no diet or therapy to improve my condition

"It's game over, we need to replace your joints"

So we shall see, I know its not an over night thing, but I'll work at it.

Thanks for the article "CannaShroom"

and i already have these in both hips

Guess there really isn't much I can do except deal with it. I went through the above surgery twice with no pain meds, pain meds of any sort trigger cluster headache for me, id rather deal with the surgical pain than a cluster, clusters hurt way the fuck worse

you may want to focus on physical therapy, trying to treat the initial exacerbations of joint pressure and worsening arthiritis.

Herbal remedies and alternative quackery may help in a placebo like manner.  But I'd generally trust the ones who've been the most educated in these ailments and go with standard guidelines.

Why were you on dexa for so long?  Was that for the cluster headaches?

Have you tried any other treatments for the clusters?  Triptans and anti-convulsants come to mind.

yea for clusters, had them since i was 14. steroids were the only thing that ever stopped them.  i was in the cycle of trying to stay at my job and keep health ins to keep away the pain... i have been on everything for the clusters from the triptans to BP meds, lithium, anti seizure meds...everything resulted in nasty side effects. bradycardia, rebound attacks, kidney stones, if there was a side effect i got it. at one point i was in the hospital at risk of cardiac arrest from all the garbage the had me on. honestly i think all the drugs they had me on made the headaches worse. doctors lasts options were to pay out of pocket for nerve stimulators or be put in a drug induced coma

the time that i was on the dexa was probably the best few months of my life, it was fucked up though i was quartering a 2mg pill and taking .5mg every other day, and no attacks and it destroyed me over time

i just use mushrooms and oxygen these days. shrooms dont stop them but make them easier to manage with o2 and caffeine

the hips are my main concern lately, some days i do pretty good considering but then there's the days i can barely move, usually weather changes and rain

was just hoping someone would have some knowledge about the arthritis, things like ibuprofen help but then i get the clusters as a result, help one thing hurt another

It sounds like a bit of a catch 22.  I see that occasionally with patients and the medications they're inclined to using.

It's important to ask more questions about your past, medical history, conditions, genetics, etc before just boldly going on spouting out suggestions for cures and treatments like others on these forums like to do.

How often do you still get the clusters?  Does the supplemental oxygen help adaquately enough for preventative measures?  Do you get aura before your clusters?

Do you have any family history of headaches? or any other neurological conditions

Do you have any history of drug abuse, other health conditions, other current medications you take?

Any previous hospitalizations for related conditions?  Any history of seizures?

Any other significant medical conditions that you deal with or take medications for?

I'm still waiting to get word back, I'm very sorry I didn't put it out there sooner. having someone recommend triptans is one thing but I don't get recommending anticonvulsants at all. Anticonvulsants are being prescribed for everything now because these companies want to try and get as much bang out of their buck and the doctors don't care who they screw over while doing it. They talk about anecdotal but all of their off label use is purely anecdotal too."Well I tried this and it didn't kill them so give it a shot! what's the worst that can happen? They die???" This is like performing surgery or using a drug that is well known for causing drug induced SLE to remove toxins from the body. How does this work exactly??? Does this surgery require removal of the liver? How does a drug that causes a serious auto immune response come into play regarding cleaning out cellular waste?

Let's just completely forget that cholesterol is OK now when just a few days ago I was condemned for making such a bold claim.

Anyway my main concern was the real possibility of reperfusion injury occurring. But this has probably already occurred in a big way and may still be occurring for all you know. This is why I've refused to say anything just yet. But you're using oxygen, which impresses me. Was this your idea or theirs? Are you on a prescription for it? Recently my doctor made a prediction and that was that hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be widely used for cancer. We're talking in upwards of $2,000 or more for a treatment when I can rent a hyperbaric tent for less then that for a month! I kid you not! because I looked into it already. I also looked into oxygen tanks but you need a script for it although I have an awesome way around it and it's completely legal too. I don't want to discuss it openly due to the nature of the gas and it's potential to be dangerous boom wise. It's actually safe from that standpoint but one never knows if/when the right circumstances may develop.

How are you doing this oxygen? What length off time are we talking here? Was this actually prescribed by a qualified doctor. You can do anything to yourself personally but prescribing the proverbial double edged sword takes courage in this day and age.

As far as the clusters go I was saying that something in your diet or environment is tripping you over and I'll stand by it. I won't delete that comment because it's either an allergic reaction or an adverse reaction. My friends dad had terrible cluster headaches when I was a teen. He was on all kinds of medications and nothing came close to working short of an ergot med which did help a little at times. It was mold allergies believe it or not and he came to the conclusion on his own long before the concept of mold and their mycotoxins was even a seriously discussed issue. Even today there is HUGE resistance to it all. Ask me how I know? I'm taking modules to get certified for indoor air quality certification and let me tell you the standards for testing are a joke! You're being exposed to something on some level that is wrecking you in a big way is all I'm saying.

You know, I'm no lawyer but I did sleep at a Quality Inn one time and this my friend may be grounds for some type of lawsuit. I'm being very serious here because from everything you've shared with us so far you have basically been gang raped by a group of incompetent clowns. And if it can be proved that there was any level of collusion to hide the details you may be set for life. You god damn deserve to be completely set up for life.

Does he deserve to be completely set up for life Liquid Smoke? Or was this just a what are ya gonna do moment in the performance of modern medicine using drugs that wreck lives. Mmmmmmmmmmmm... I'm fucking pissed that you would even imply that an alternative protocol is less effective and more harmful to him then what has brought him to this point so far. How many people die each year to to hospital screw ups? Well???

How in the world do these types of things happen???

From everything I've read it's probably way too late already but I'm no expert, just a critical thinker. Dr SmokeScreen is the so called expert here, after all he's going to be a plastic surgeon one day. I'm hoping that some form of recovery is possible and if you're using oxygen on their advice then hydrogen peroxide foot baths are in order. My doctor is basically one of the pioneers in hyperbaric oxygen therapies. All of the book writing gurus in the field who treat patients and see athletes looking for a competitive edge over others seek council from and call my MD their guru. If this is the case and you are receiving relief with the protocol then foot baths are even better for you in the long haul according to him. You could do it as many times as you want. A completely cheap therapy that is way too awesome to not consider if oxygen therapy is cool to use.

(edit) Holy Christ!!! I stepped away from writing this and came back to complete it and discover you're sending him a PM after going through what you've been through so far? WOW... OK, cool no problem... Peace2U my friend... PeaCe, you're obviously in very good hands now...

yes its script, liquid medical grade... i found out it works when i went to a 1st health care center instead of a hospital one day, asked my HA sepcialist and he wrote me a lifetime script. i use 12-15lpm with an optimask, it aborts 99% of my attacks. O2 works by constricting the blood vessels surrounding the trigeminal nerve

My headaches began after a concussion, and typically occur at the same time of day...

I appreciate your help but I'm gonna say your way off on your assumptions and ideas, no offense.

I have lived in the same house my whole life, when I was 17 I had clusters at the time, and took mushrooms for recreation fun times. I didnt have an attack for over a year after words. At that point in my life i was episodic and having 4-6 weeks of attacks in the spring and fall...Theres many speculations on the cause of CH including hormones, abnormalities of the hypothalamus, neck injury, genetics...Psilocybin and other ergoptamine/tryptamine substances alter blood flow to the hypothalamus and in most cases "shock" it back to normal functions. having a nasty concussion at such a young age, damage may have been done in the brain, and developing at the time (i was 14) likely didnt heal or develop properly

I know psilo will work for me, it has before. Although i think i have serious damage to my brain from all the BS medications i was put on. the more meds i was on the worse they got.

I'm not seeking assistance for my headaches, I'm looking for help with the arthritis in my hips
Likely theres nothing i can do for them

Kudos to this specialist. I know  the benefits of oxygen overall, my MD is the MAN! when it comes to oxygen, HEY! JAMA even said so! especially when it comes to auto immune response disorders which cluster headaches are. Look it up, although they claim the information is of yet inconclusive they say that regarding everything yet Integrative and Functional MD's heal people every day of the week. Go figure...

When I tell you that my guy is the master when it comes to oxygen I'm being laid back about it. LS's own rag called JAMA has given my MD Kudos for it! Major props! They basically sucked his nutsac!

Hydrogen peroxide foot baths, 30:1 water to 3% H2O2 and a heaping teaspoonful of epsom salt is a good thing to consider. Do it multiple times per day since you're laid up home. My MD said that he predicts hyperbaric oxygen therapy will soon become a standar4d protocol based on what is being written. He is hyperbaric therapy and he's saying foot baths are just as effective yet cheap!

Yes, psilocybin is an amazing molecule, what they're doing with it now is genius although they don't try and take credit for the guidance. A trail had been blazed long ago and they are just getting back on track again.

You may say it all started with a concussion because it did but you had allergies before that, it is something else altogether now my friend. Inflammation is at play here, you have had some form of an auto immune issue before the head injury, and after reading everything here and what you've sent me it's clear to me now and all of it is related, but whatever, I'm misguided. Even though you feel the cluster headaches have nothing to do with your ACQUIRED DISEASE STATE, Integrative and Functional MD's say they are and this has been an ongoing thing with you. You never got rid of your allergies, you think you did but they merely stopped expressing any outward symptoms you had and other issues developed. But we'll let the good doctor give you his guidance, I'm anxious to hear what his solution is.

I read all of LS's  pharmaceutical propaganda all the time. He has been borged! I'm telling you, you banged your head hard and the inflammation that was driving your allergies had something new to work with and you lived your life from that point on in this constant state of disease. And later it became something even bigger which caused them to medicate you and that medication took your hips down. This is a sin man, you are way too young to have had to go through all of this.

You know the more I think about you and your situation,  you could have any one of a number of issues. IgE is a weak and inconclusive test because there are more antibody isotypes of mammals then that. Hyper and delayed reactions should never be ignored. Hell, the more I think about it, it could be viral or bacterial too. It could be related to Leaky Gut and gut fermentation. You poor dude you is all I have to say...

Yeah well this is exactly the way they work. I developed severe abdominal pain and had to go to the hospital. I was sent home with chronic constipation and told to use an over the counter. Three weeks later I was readmitted to the hospital with pancreatitis that was so bad the doctor told my wife I would have died had I waited any longer to come in. Almost two weeks of fasting, no food or water, not even a chip of ice. The MD who saw me the three weeks before entered my room one day with some papers but said nothing, he just looked at the papers. I eventually told him "I remember you. You were the doctor who told me I was constipated". He didn't say a word. Not a single word, not even an "I'm sorry for sending you home without testing you further at the time", because by doing so he would have been admitting he screwed up. He just left the room as silently as he walked into it, so I know all about incompetence. In reviewing all of the documentation I technically have a case. Who the hell knows the long term effect all of the CT scans I had. 7 CT scans total? I was told one CT scan is the equivalent of over 100 chest x-rays. Talk about things that make one go Hmmm...

I also have thickening of the heart muscle on the left side of my heart that wasn't there years before when a nuclear stress test was done. Not there one nuclear test and there the second after being on paxil for over 7 years at that point. Paxil is being implicated in this condition. By the way, Paxil has a black box warning like many other drugs.

Let's see what Liquid Smoke is going to advise you to do. I have my own ideas for the pain, especially since you're using oxygen but because of the nature of your situation regarding your AVN I'm waiting for some information because perfusion injury is a complete game in and of itself.

I really wish you the very best man...

I was wondering if any one has any tips or tricks to minimize the stiff, inflamed, aching, cracking of joints.

Well respected gels, topical lotions, foods/herbs/mushrooms that might take the edge off

Any little bit of relief will help, weather changes and rain destroy me

I'm going to say it regardless whether it's going to trip some over or not.

I'd apply castor oil packs to the hips where you're experiencing pain. You might be able to find a pair of comfortable shorts to hold them in place or some type of loose wrap. Place the packs directly over the painful location. When your not using them you could slip them into a plastic bag because you'll be the only one using them. Add a little fresh castor oil to each pack in order to create a film on the surface of the skin when you apply them and switch to sesame oil for a few days every now and then. I remember watching a video of his where he mentioned mustard oil too. They are a tremendous benefit to many who do this but it may take a little time to kick in because the oil needs to work it's way through deep tissue.

What do you have to lose? Castor oil is inexpensive and completely safe in the big picture. There's more I want to say but this is a good start until I get word.
