Going to the Fireworks

I love America

Riding my bike to the town's fireworks about an hour. Early this year for some reason.

Just checked the weather radar though.  HUGE storm about an hour and a half away. 

Trying to decide if it's worth it.

It's a 20 minute ride for me.  downhill on the way there.  If I get there and they have time to launch I don't mind if I get a little wet on the way back up hill.

If I get there and it pours and they don't shoot off jack shit I'll be incredibly pissed.

As a guy who has been shooting professional fireworks shows for about two years, I can tell you that if there is a way they can fire them before the storm gets there, they will. If the storm is going to pass quickly, they will cover them with plastic/foil and shoot the show once it passes.

We work too god damn hard to set those shows up to let rain ruin it. Depending on the size of the show, setup can take anywhere from 3 hours to two days. If there is a way the show can be shot, they will do it. Setting up then tearing down a show without shooting it not only means we don't get paid, but it means we have to do a shitload of work and get no fun out of it.

THE SHOW WILL GO ON! (if possible, :lol:)

go. if it gets canceled at least you'll have went for a bike ride. wear "dirty" clothes so you won't care if you get wet, comes a point when you can't get any more drenched and you just stop caring about the rain.
put your cellphone in a plastic bag.

One thing I forgot to mention, if they're doing an electronic fire show and the rain is light, they'll go ahead and shoot the damn thing through the plastic. But you said there was a storm coming so I'm not so sure if they'd shoot it. Where is the show? I'll check the radar and let you know your chances of seeing the show.

Thanks,  I"ve been watching the radar,  I'm going for it.

Looks like a 15 minute wide band of red on the radar will pass right about the time the show is scheduled. clear after that. They'll either be going early or probably after the rain.  I don't think they'll cancel.

Got myself a poncho and a plastic bag for my smokes and cellphone.

Gonna get wet.

It's all fun and games until you get blown up in a freak accident, which happened recently. Not fun, trust me on that one, my hearing will probably never be the same.

Not to the point of making shells yet, that will take years. For now I'm just going to be shooting shows until I am able to buddy up with one of the guys who makes the shells. It's a family run company that has been in business for over 100 years. Gotta earn their respect before they bring ya in the shop and start teaching you how to make the fireworks. Still working on getting to know the higher-ups in the company, there's lots of them. Plus, that's a whole different level of ATF licensing and OSHA rules/requirements.

man sorry to hear that about your hearing, I have an ear more def than the other and it bothers me at time, especially since I make music. that's what you get for wroking with noisy powertools without protection :facepalm:

I remember seeing a doc about making fireworks and it doesnt look THAT complicated, some powder some paper some more powder and paper and your set. I oversimplify it of course but that's how it look like. I hope you make it in the family circle of initiate :thumbup:
we have a fireworks festival over here and every years I see new shit, look like it's an art in constant development.
is that your main job and do you tour?

Nah, it's a side job, but some people who are in with the family go all over the east coast doing shows during the summer. I make $125-$200 a show depending on the size of the show and the size of the crew we have. Biggest show I shot was around a $12,000 show. I've still yet set up the "mega shows" that run $20,000-$150,000. Eventually I hope to get to that level.

As far as making the shells goes, I've talked to a few of the guys who make them and there is actually a ton of chemistry and physics involved in it. Not as easy as it may seem. The company I work for is well know for being able to produce blues and oranges, which are some of the hardest colors to produce in fireworks (a few people in the family got their degree in chemistry for the sake of the business). They also do shaped shells like smiley faces, hearts, planets, stars, and letters (think three separate shells that spell U S A).

They canceled.

Everyone leaving as I got there.

Made it home before the rain.

They had three nights scheduled.  I'm hoping they just shoot off 50% more tomorrow night.

I remember when I first saw star and planet shaped firework my mind was blown, I'm yet to see smilees and letter tho.
they make it look like our festival gather the best from around the world but I guess it's just hype.

I REALLY enjoy fireworks, last year I planned to go there while on hallucinogens but never made it :mad: this year it's gonna happen, the site is fantastic it in front and over a HUGE waterfall :awethumb:

Fireworks are so fucking boring.  It's the same show, anywhere, ever.  Until they can recreate the original Star Wars trilogy entirely in fireworks, I'm not impressed...

That crew is a bunch of pussies. Unless it was a big show, they could have shot the thing in 15-20 minutes tops. Did it even start raining before the cancelled it?

the first 2 after "neat one just because" are awesome!!

one of my fav are the ones that explode very very large and then fall for a long time in a blinkering type of rain.

I always hack my view to this show from some spot but I can only imagine what it's like to be right on the spot when these blows.:thousandisland:
