Possibly. I went outside for a moment to try and listen for anything. Didn't hear a damn thing.

I think you were right. I just went outside again and I heard what I believe is thunder. Very distant.
I'm real tired, so I'm being kinda weird right now.

all lightning makes noise, and im pretty sure there is no such things as "heat lightning".
Lightning bolts are breaking the sound barrier with such intensity that it is impossible for there to be a naturally occuring lightning bolt without a sonic boom

When I was in Switzerland I saw the same thing, lots of flashes but no thunder. It was far away on the other side of a mountain.

I took pictures of this storm for over an hour and never heard a sound. In fact, it was dead calm and eerily silent with clear skies where I was at. Notice the stars in the picture, the four stars on the left side are the "bucket" of the big dipper and Polaris (the North Star) can be seen at the top center.

That's an awesome picture. I wish I could get my camera to take pictures of the night sky like that..
The place I'm living in right now is about 2 miles (as the crow flies) from a large harbor that feeds into the Gulf of Mexico. Now that it's summer and the Gulf is heating up to the 80s it has really kickstarted our wet season. Almost everyday I can sit on the front step of my house and watch these huge thunderheads supercharged by the heat and humidity just drift over us or past us. Often, they'll just have intense lightning that leaps through the clouds like spiderwebs but seldom hit the ground. Don't usually ever hear any thunder from them either, and I can tell that they're only a few miles out at the most.. I think thunder is more a reaction caused by the air around a lightning bolt being much hotter than the surrounding air, and the clash between the temperatures causes the shockwave/thunder..
anyway, here's a pic of one of those clouds from off our front porch.

Wow great pic summit. What kind of camera do you use? My camera has a hard time making pictures with stars on them.
