the title can neatly be answered in two words ..dick cheney...

w/o the benefit of 20/20 hindsight ..if 10 junkies in the bronx say "dont invade iraq"..but dick cheney says do invade iraq.. the vast majority of americans would choose (and did choose) to trust cheneys' "professional judgement" over not only the worthless opinions of the JITBs..but their own worthless opinions as well...

but of course the hard lesson that was learned is that ppl like dick cheney simply hide behind their credentials to justify their own selfish interests...

if anything..the positions taken by the ruling class in a meritocracy should be immediately suspect.. given as how "merit" is defined as being the head of an imperialist corporation such as halliburton...
