Do you have evidence to support this claim, or are you just parroting what you heard from someone else?

Only read 1st page, but all I am saying about this is the RIAA is fucking re-tarded. The argument for downloading music, claiming that it leads to PURCHASING said music, is very true, at least for me.
I've bought hundreds of dollars worth of records in the past few years. Sure, I "obtain" more than I buy, but if I had not OBTAINED that music, I would never have been EXPOSED to it, and hence, would never BUY it. I guess they'd prefer for everyone to go back in time, when I might have bough 2 CDs in a 10 year period.
Sorry, but I can't live my life listening to lil fucking wayne and wocka flacka faggot on the radio.

Evidence.  Art is found in burial sites, trash heaps and other archaeological finds of all cultures at all times.  You literally have to go pre-homosapein to see a time where art was not intimately intertwined with daily life.

Your arguments are ridiculous here.  Clearly art does not need IP laws to survive.

How is that evidence that every single family has created art?  That's the part of the claim that I find dubious.

thats not true, because multiple offenses incur strictly punishments.

Also, your arguments on that first page make sense, but support a $54,000 fine for some downloading is draconian. That's my opinion.

DieCommie, you're wrong. The earliest art we know of is roughly 45,000 years old. That is about 160,000 years after modern humans appeared.

I could be way off base interms of relate this to the succession of posts you two are having, but art needs absolutely no laws, or even compensation to survive. If you want a large amount of people to hear/see/feel your art, then probably unless you want to go travelling door to door on charity.

Art is, initially, made to exist. Not to make money. I've made more music than the majority of recording artists in the 20th century. I've made in total $1756NZD off this music, and i'm incredibly happy with that.

I'll assume you mean "stricter"...and no....in a world without punitive damages, the first civil suit and the 100th would have the same maximum recovery...

We're not talking about crimes here where someone is "sentenced" based on their record.

nitpickery. who cares if every single family ever created art, who cares if they didnt.

art will always exist as long as there is a fucked up human mind and a canvass of some sort. I am guilty of countless downloads of movies, software, music, and anything else you can think of. im sure if i asked the makers of these things, 'is it ok if I download your stuff off the internet instead of paying you?' I would know what the answer would be.

its stealing, no gray area. its fucking theft.

I steal shit off the internet. there I said it, can you? And even if you dont it doesnt matter, youre still a fucking criminal one way or another. Its not about that though.

I would no way pay 50k for downloading 20 fucking songs; that is a bullshit penalty that makes a martyr out of a person (i.e., the posters original argument, that the perception that our government doesnt have a cumwad of interest for individuals is legitimized through such actions).

She deserved a few hundred dollar fine for doing that, and so do I for that matter. If I could write a check for $1000 to pay off every artist ive ever stole from, sure ill do it. I dont wanna steal from people, I just dont wanna drive to the store to pay $15 for one song I need to manipulate for a shitty ringtone im gonna give to someone else. I dont wanna pay $18 for a movie made in 1947 that I need to watch once out of curiosity.

The Internet exists. File Sharing exists. Digital information is easily accessible by anyone with a computer.
Good luck, RIAA, your good old days are passed and gone.
Keep paddling upstream with a turd for a paddle if you want to, but the technology has reached a point of no return and sooner or later they will have to adapt to it just like everybody else.
And I'm not even talking right vs. wrong, or stealing vs. not stealing.
I'm just talking about what is.
And what is... is we have technology which enables ripping, streaming, file sharing, etc. and there's really nothing the RIAA can do about it in the long run (big picture).
Yes, targeting random citizens for settlement money is an option, but how exactly does that fix the underlying problem?
It's a never-ending battle that can't be won.
Sooooo I dunno, maybe it's time for them to sit down at the round table and come up with a new business model or product line, one which can actually compete in the market place.

Sorry but art has flourished long before, and will continue to thrive long after, regardless of IP Laws. If anything they hinder art.

prior to the last 50 years there's been little means by which to pirate
music, the mass production of cassette recorders increased piracy as did
CD recorders and DVD recorders. how long does it continue before musicians
feel it's just not worth it, how long before the record industry says 'we're
losing too much to continue'. how long before the movie industry stops
producing new and original stuff... trick question because that was years
ago, how long before the gaming companies start downsizing because everyone
is using cracked versions of their games

so you keep fooling yourself, sure, 'art' will continue but it may not be
long before it's like it was 300 years ago, the only music you hear is what
was made years ago and all played by locals. before the invention of radio
who were the top names in the music industry?

I'm all for taking the business out of music. Maybe when people stop worrying
about what music will sell and start making the music for the music we will
start to see some originality, creativity, and talent.

Nah, art is pervasive.  Every family can and did make and consume art.  Every civilization has been full of art long before ip laws.

Maybe not every family, but I agree with the general sentiment. Art and music definitely predated IP protections, and I believe there was good art and music in virtually any time period you can think of, all the way back to caveman times. Some of the best traditional musicians in my local scene are middle aged guys with day jobs who might do the odd paid gig but mostly just play because they love it. The few pros mostly make a living mostly by giving lessons and doing gigs, not so much by selling CDs.

just because being broke, poor, and starving sometimes contributes to great works of art, it doesnt mean that being rich, and recognized makes you a shitty artist.

good art comes with personality, devotion and creativity. they should be rightly rewarded

I agree that it has existed for a long time before ip laws...

The fact is, however, that many art forms were quite rare in the past...and were only for the elites of society.  Today, we really don't have that problem because even art that is expensive to make can be made because the expense of making it can be recouped by selling it.

without ip laws, that simply wouldn't be true.

fuck em, most new artists suck shit sticks. but  the ones who don't, i'll buy their album, at some point anyways. at least... well, my favorites. fuck, but that could be a lot though...

oh well, i don't feel bad about "ripping off" old artist whom are already ten years past their glory days, especially when i am not even interested in their new records.

(i'm talking like Neil Young here...)
