It's funny you mention the nervousness. I get really agitated while trying this for some reason. Not nervous though, just agitated.

no it doesn't only work with headphones...... it depends on how you have your speakers lined-up... I have a speaker pointing from the side into each ear so these kinds of things still work pretty well ;D

I don't think its overall a very enjoyable experience, when I was listeneing to it I kept thinking of the Poltergeist films and the static noise from the televisions.

I think you all are just relating the pink noise to the static of tv.. which in creepy movies there is always a scene where it's totally silent beside a television that somehow was put on static. I think you all are just creeping your selves out.

Why does the static sound of the tv sound like pink noise? Is there some correlation?

actually it reminds me more of when you have nothing playing on ur stereo and u turn the volume all the way up. I dont hear anything besides the hissing, but i dont have any headphones right now.. and living in a dorm there is always another noise from somewhere.

I think the relationship between tv static and "pink noise" is the method in which they are "created." tv static is actually made of waves arranged in "random" patterns.. I think noise is generated the same way

So random sounds are disconcerting? What's the most non-random sound there is?

Have you listened to Coil's 'Time Machines' album?

Back in college I worked as a lab assistant to the behavioral psych professor on campus. We used white noise (at about 70db I think) when running rats in skinner boxes to limit environmental variables. Sitting in a darkened room with 30 white rats clicking away on response levers is a pretty trippy experience in itself, but I definately noticed auditory hallucinations and an increase in alertness, sometimes agitation.

Of course this WAS college, so keep that in mind about the hallucinations, but I could see this idea being used by experimenters trying to document subjective effects of different drugs on themselves. Doesn't sound like much fun to me, but I guess you could sit in a dim room with white noise in the background and dose. Actually, with a blindfold this could be a poor man's sensory depravation chamber.

On a side note, another professor in the dept. was doing memory experiments on rats using scopolomine and lsd.

Got a question about a substance?  Erowid might already have your answer! Have questions about the  mushroom experience? The  Tripper's FAQ may have your answer or someone else might have had your question before.

The reason I asked earlier about if anyone had heard Time Machines by Coil, is because it's the same effect. 4 tracks of noise, meant to facilitate time travel. It's interesting, and listening to one headphones can create visual distortions and other weirdness (or just a nasty headache).
I have been meaning to give it a whirl on a trip, and hopefully I can do this soon.

That does not sound safe. I imagine listening to the hiss at full volume and somebody comes in and turns the CD player on. Ouch!

Use brown noise if you don't like the pink.
