Anyone know of any breweries that operate as a winery does?

Meaning the cultivation of the barley and hops is done on site to express the specific region.

I think it would be cool to have a brew farm where everything is produced on site from the malt to the hops to the beer. A work exchange program could be arranged like the WOOF thing.

You could even go as far as growing blocks of grapes, and some stands of apples, and other fruits as well. Then produce wines and other specialty fermented libations!

I like the idea of terroir being applied to beer.

Terroir. And yeah, that's a great idea. Maybe the grape yeast could be used for all the yeasty needs as well, for maximum localityness.

Im having fun thinking about this.

You could focus on fine ales in the beginning. Nice area specific strong pales and IPAs, dark malty ales with a up front crisp hop character worthy of being aged for a few years. Then after the trees and vines grow out you could start cellering the wine, ciders and meads!

The honey would all be local too as you would need the bees to pollinate.

You could have a tasting room and restaurant on site as well.

There is a winery near where i live that hires big groups to forage wild local ingredients for their wine.

i also do that myself every fall and end up with a winter/spring supply of booze

after a few years experience i do want to say that my booze is damn good tasty, you likely wouldnt know its home brew aside from some of the odd local fruits and berries i sometimes use that you rarely see on the market.

You would need some animals around to collect manure for fertilizer so you would be able to make cheese as well. Toss up some solar panels and and windmills to produce the farms energy needs.

You could even throw in a pond to farm fish in.

I'm sure there are some in the Northwest, where most hops growing is done.  I don't know of any specifically, unfortunately.

A relative of mine is actually currently in the process of working with farmers, states, and universities to bring hops back to the American Northeast, and he is planning some projects right now that involve local farmers growing hops and opening on-site microbreweries.  Could become a trend.

Fun facts: There are thousands of varieties of hops.  They can be used for a variety of purposes; there are tea hops, hops that you can use in salads, and decorative, colorful hops that can be used to make wreaths.  They are also closely related to cannabis, which is why getting drunk on hoppy beer can sometimes feel a bit like being stoned.  And they are very healthful!  Beer :drooling:
