Let's Debate Creationists!!!
    #16183740 -

okay so, i'm in this online astronomy class that is apparently riddled with god lovers

before i go to write my reply to this one post, i thought i'd have some fun in the shroomery with it first. to gather more information for input, of course.

here are a couple posts regarding some classmate's view of the big bang theory

Has the Big Bang theory been disproved?

Ok, I'm just going to come right out and say it, I don't believe in the Big Bang theory. I don't believe (which I know isn't a scientific "term") because I believe in creation. I did not believe in the theory before this class, even though I didn't really understand anything about it. After reading about the Big Bang, I still don't believe it.

With that being said, after reading the text about the Big Bang theory I thought it would be a good idea to try to understand why it doesn't make sense, instead of just saying I refuse to believe that.

There is actually a wealth of information that disproves the theory, from elderly galaxies being discovered, to the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The first law states that matter cannot be created or destroyed, where did the original matter come from? The second law states that everything moves towards disorder, not that out of disorder(Big Bang or "Big Stretch") comes order (our universe). This law proves true as we see our planet wearing down and becoming more disordered.

What I was most intrigued by was this 12 year old child genius, Jacob Barnett. He apparently has an IQ that could be higher than Einsteins. He has come up with a hypothesis, through mathematical calculations, that the Big Bang theory couldn't be correct because of the amount of carbon in the universe. You can read his story here, www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article, you can also watch a video about his background here, youtu.be/g91IQsS2spA.

Jacob says that he is developing a new theory for how the universe began.

What do you think?

Do you think that people try to understand and agree with this theory because the alternative may be believing in creation?

I'm a creationist as well (or ID if you wish).  The reading and the video on Jake was interesting to say the least.  The little snipits they had on Astronomy was fun, because now I actually had a clue of what he was talking about.  My answer to your question is yes, most must hold fast to a no-God universe, because to admit it would turn on a whole new set of obligations and responsibilities that are too much to bear.  As you know a belief in creationism does not for one nano-second detract one from scientific inquiry.  Indeed some of the greatest scientist past and present are Creationist.  Contrary to what most people think, Creationist are more open minded than non-Creationist.  Learning about Jake and others like him should cause everyone to pause and wonder at the limit of our current scientific understanding of so many things.  We would be wise to take what we know, build on it, but be careful not to be to dogmatic about our conclusions.

now, lets have some fun

(p.s. i have no opinion about the big bang theory, whether it happened, or didn't happen. how the hell should i know, i wasn't there. its a theory, not a religion). but, i do know there are things about the mechanics of the universe which are still being unraveled, and we may likely never understand the full functioning mechanisms of the whole of creation in our lifetime. so, how about we get some other theories to throw in here to make some sense of this universe dilemma. quantum mechanics, string theory, anti-matter, planck's constant, vacuum energy, zero-point energy, black holes & white holes, etc.. whatever

I believe in a creator. I also believe the creator most likely created the universe with a big bang. I think there were probably many universes before this one and there will be many afterwards. I think to not believe in a creator is sad and naive.

Evidence of the big bang theory- Growing every day

Evidence of creationism- The bible and other religious texts.

Uhhh, I think that settles it.

Why would a creator god use the big bang to create the universe?  Why not just think it into existence?  The multiverse theory is interesting and can explain many things.  Why would one believe in a creator when there's no evidence that there is one?  To me that's sad and naive.

What do you mean created?  Nothing was "created" from the big bang.  Give an example of what you consider to be a creation in the universe?

I tend to believe scientific facts when they are presented to me in a concrete argument. Do you really expect me to answer your question? I don't know, nor do I care. Science and God are not exclusive things in my eyes.

nothing was created by the big bang? hmm... everything?i

big bang is a theory anyway, not necessarly truth.

im about to make dinner, i am creating a meal.  yes i am only changing the state of the matter, but i am still creating a new state.

youve got to realise that "creationist" myths arent meant to be read literally, but metaphorically, or allegorically.

what if i consider the universe itself god?

i noticed you mentioned multiverses, where is the evidence for that?!

The big bang is just as a creationist argument as that of a monotheistic god. both came into being without explanation. You ever just drop everything and wonder why there is something instide of nothing? Yea, same shit different pile.

Gravity itself is not a theory.

our theories about how it work are theories.

i hope you realise that multiverse or string theory, and more precisely superposition theory are not backed by science.

ever heard of schroedingers cat?

superpositions are a rediculous hypothesis.

i have a feeling you have too much faith in what "scientists" say, without really looking it up in detail yourself.

sounds religous to me, only so cslled "scientists" are the religous authority you have blind faith in.

Lol shins you're wrong brah, everything is happening at once, hence Schrodingers cat. Their is no space between the "the" and "when"

Something from nothing:

Visualize a lemon. Now where was that lemon before you thought of it? It didnt exist.

Further, we could never understand a 'creator' any more than a computer can understand it's programmer. Sure, maybe the program understands that [when this condition is met, this function happens], but the program, by the inherent nature of the fundamental system, does not, cannot, and will not ever understand the thoughts, emotions, feelings, or motives of writing the program. The program has no basis to comprehend that the programmer is doing it to pay a mortgage and support his family, or he's an avid hobby program writer, or just whatever.

This is just an analogy of course, not to imply the universe is some kind of matrix simulation. Not to imply anything about the Big Bang theory either, it will inevitably be replaced by a new theory as well. Which is why we shouldnt place too much importance on any specific theory, because even all that shit I said up there, is still a 'what' of the real world, and every 'what' is a class, and we cannot classify the classifier. Every logical system must contain a premise which it cannot define without contradicting itself. We must take the universe as a premise. It didnt come from anywhere. Well, "it" "didnt" "come" "from" "anywhere"

You see the futility of this? None of these things are real. Anything we can talk or think about, is inherently classification. Nothing is as it seems, nor is it otherwise.

Thats bullshit and there is no evidence to back that up.

Copenhagen quantam mechanics is not backed by evidence, just assumption.

its a freeking religion for christs sake.

A tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it.

therefore; multiverse!

How so? Can you explain your stance? I know copenhagans stance is fundamentally a assumptious stance but I still agree with a lot of the insights the theory has established.

It assumes that if one does not observe something, every possible thing is happening at once.

A quantam mechanist would say that if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, it did not fall, but instead exists in some quantam flux multi-dimension where any and every outcome is happening at once until someone walks up to see "hey it fell."

it assumes that the double slit experiment proves it when it doesnt.

But the tree, it evolves in that state that is hearable. Everything is possible at once, that is the secret of the universe.

Thats a bogus religion, sorry :S

if everything is possible lets see you teleport over here, then turn yourself into a cat.

possiblilities are governed by (divine)laws of physics concerning what state something is in.

My understanding was that the double split experiment with today's understandings does prove evidence for that argument.
