Was US cold war-era policy in South/Central America beneficial to its interests?
    #16180371 -

The US was involved heavily in covert and undemocratic activities in South/Central America during the cold war. A number of people have questioned the neccesity or even benefit of these interventions- in the long or short term.

Were the US's activities in the southern americas beneficial to US interests?

--
I suspect they were not, especially in the long term.  The activities were illegal and immoral violations of the same international law the US was accusing the Soviet block of violating in the harshest terms.  This seems to still have a profoundly negative effect on the morality of the US and its motives.

Even at the time, many of the governments overthrown with help from the US were not an apparent threat.  It seems communist influences in governments were conflated with Soviet alignment or control, and the former seeming sufficient to charecterize the government as a national security risk.

What do you think?

Hard to say as I'm not sure who's running the show and how or why (what their goals are)  Fortunately I don't really care anymore either.

Which has not one thing to do with the question asked.
