Anyone know whats the best bank to go with?

Ive been using bank of america for 6 years but now I hate it because of the overdraft fees, so does anyone know of a better one?

If you hate overdraft fees, check out ING Direct.  They have no overdraft fees, they have an overdraft line of credit like a credit card.

They are an e-bank, but are by far the best bank that I have used.

When i picked a new bank i went to http://www.bankrate.com/ and reserched ones close to me and that offered the stuff I was looking for. It helped having all the plans in front of me to choose which is best. Hope that helps.

I like M&T, but my needs in a bank are VERY minimal.  I need a place to store money, nothing more.

I don't think you're going to experience a great deal of difference between the major banks.  Though I have to say that ING Direct is kind of a pain in the ass if you actually need to work with a banker.  If all you're doing is parking money in a savings account, they're OK... but the minute you need to do something more complex, their service is lacking BIG TIME.  I personally, will never use them based on my own personal experience.

Most of my money is in a Wells Fargo account, and has been for almost two decades.  They have never charged me fees (though my accounts were grandfathered as no-fee since I've held them since I was a minor), and in the few circumstances where I made a mistake and landed a penalty, they have forgiven it simply by asking.  They have also offered me services for free that other banks sometimes charge for, including checking accounts (business and personal), money orders and medallion signature guarantees.

But truly, if you want something a little more personal, you would probably be best served by a local credit union.  Check out the ones in your area and punch 'em into Google to do some research... you might find that they're the way to go.  They also generally have more responsible practices over their money by refraining from using as much leverage and/or complex derivative financial products as the major banks, which could make them safer in the event of a future financial crisis.

Do you ever need to go into a physical branch?  In my years of banking I never went into the physical branch, so ING was a natural switch for me.

What do you want out of your bank, a debit card and direct deposit?

I currently have Chase, and ever since they added the monthly service fees I have really started to dislike them.
You can get around the fees by direct depositing $500 in each account you have with them. One way you can do this is move $500 into your paypal from your chase account, and then move that back into your chase account from your paypal. This counts as a direct deposit and satisfies the requirement so you would not be charged a monthly fee, but is a pain in the ass to do.

I recommend that you don't sign up with chase unless you use one of those $100 sign up bonus coupons that they send out to everyone.

I get great service with Chase cause I pick and choose what I use from them and they are so large it's very unlikely the govt would ever let them fail.

Fifth third has always been good to me the local bank I use the people that work there have always been very good to me so that is more or less why I enjoy banking with them. Even when I got my banking information stolen they quickly handled the situation and I got all disputed charges reversed back into my account couldn't hurt to look them up and see plus they usually aren't as busy.

I use a local bank called Fifth Third. I use Student Checking which has no fees. I just store my money in there. As long as I don't overdraft it doesn't cost anything to use.

Sweet!  ING now does paperless check deposits via pictures.  I just snapped a picture of the front and back of my check and submitted it.  Done, no more mailing checks, no more driving to banks.

the two words I'd have used are "balance your checkbook"

most banks charge a fee for checking, some waive the fee with certain
requirements such as chase waiving it if you have 5 transactions per
month on your ATM card or wells fargo with minimum deposit limits, each
month the first thing to deduct from your account is those fees and each
transaction you conduct needs to be entered into the most important part
of this plan, your check book ledger, keep it with you always and each time
you write a check or use your card you enter the amount to be deducted that
way you always know exactly what's in your account and when you know the
money isnt there you know you dont need to write the check

no matter what bank someone goes with there's always going to be an
overdraft fee, it's up to the bank as to the amount, not only do they
charge one but the stores charge them as well and if it's not paid they
they reject your check on subsequent purchases. the best way to handle it
is to simply balance your checkbook, do it every day, every transaction so
you dont forget at the end of the day. keep all your receipts and double
check at the end of the day. keep those receipts for the year and look into
what you can write off on your taxes

in 15 years of consistently maintaining a checking account I've only
bounced 2 checks, I stopped dealing with banks because I got sick of the
ever changing policies, when they started charging people I write check to
for cashing the checks simply because they didnt have an account with my
bank, that's where I drew the line

I disagree, my bank gave me an $8,000 overdraft credit line with a 13.24% APR. I'm a stoner and I bounce checks all the time; it never costs me more than a few cents in interest.
