First Night in Vancouver

Last week I spontaneously decided to go to Vancouver because I quit my job and wanted some excitment. It was a long drive up there, but thats a whole other story. Myself and 4 friends arrived at the Holiday Inn on Howe (in case you are familair with the town) in Vancouver around 2pm and quickly set about in search of the primary ingrediant in a fun night life.... Alcohol. This task prooved much harder than expected, being Americans and buying 40's and beer in 7-11's... We found the largest Non-alcoholic alcohol section we'd ever seen but no real booze. Our frustration grew over another hour or so as we wondered like poor sober Americans on the streets complaining about the scarce availability of inebriants. We finally asked for directions to the closest "Liqour Store" and finally arrived. Gleefully browsing the rows and rows of yummy happiness we selected 3 bottles of champagne, and two cases of beer and a 1/5th of vodka. After cracking open the champagne and getting good and trashed on beer and vodka, those legal decided to go to the clubs and pretend they liked that sort of thing..hehe. So i was left with my friend who too was not yet 19... and we decided maybe we should try to get some of this "BC Bud" (although our area is saturated with it anyway, why not get it in its homeland right?). We decided that the first person that offered us pot we would consider (we had been offered a few times before but we had our sights on beer first). Night had fallen and it had to be around11pm when we sauntered out onto the street.. No further than the walking past the alleyway behind our hotel, there is a barefooted blackman who offers us crack, we say no, then he offers "buds"... we look at eachother, look back and say "what you got?"... after briefly inspecting his dirty shwag and having our senses come back to us ("Hey this guy has no shoes and is obviously tweaked").. we decided against buying any and walk back the other direction in front of our hotel. No sooner do we leave the barefooted blackguy, a tweaked out white guy starts following us. I have never in my life seen a pair of cracked out motherfuckers as gone as these two.. anyway he runs up to us and says "Hey, dont buy from taht crazy cracked out nigger, nigger doesn't even have shoes... his shit aint alright, i got the good stuff." Now, barefoot black guy knows the nieghborhood and it takes a crackhead to know a crackhead... so he comes running up barefeet and all yelling "Bitch they's mine, stop stealin my shit". and comes wobbling up to us as the white guy goes and hides across the street. He asks us in an accusatory tone "Where you going? You gonna buy some weed right?" we tell him that we weren't interrested anymore and didn't want any crack or weed. Apparently this distresses him and he says "WHAT?! You gonna buy some weed, dont fuck with me like that." To which we respond "We dont want your weed, fuck off".. Now this crazy fucker looks around a little confused, not knowing what to do next and then sticks his hand in his pocket.. I'm fucking plastered drunk, and i'm thinking in my drunk slow mind "is this little fuck gonna try and rob us?" Sure enough, he grabs my friend who was the smaller of the two and says "I"ll shank you right here bitch, Give me my money" Now, in the states this would be a very serious situation, in fact you probably would have gotten shanked already, but we were in canada, with a crazy crackhead that had no shoes... and you'd think a guy would buy shoes before a kniife, not to mention his pants were light material, and there was no outline of anything in his pocket before he stuck his hand in it.. but the situation was still a little unnerving. After he demanded some american money (my friend had been stupid enogh to answer him when he asked were we were from), I gave him a good shove and said "you aren't getting shit from us fucker"... and strangely it worked... we turned around and walked inside our hotel (This all happened with in view of the rooms). Great part is, when he saw that the black guy was out of the picture, the white crackhead starts running across the street saying "see you can't trust a nigger with no shoes on... I'll sell you some nice weed, do it in your hotel room see, i'm not a threat like that crazy fuck." We insist we dont want any, but he runs infont of us and takes the stairs three at a time yelling "I'll come up anyway man." I whisper to my friend not to stop or even look at our hotel door as we pass it, and we walk to the fire exit where he offers us a "free joint of powdered weed" and slams a cokebag of what looks like minced spices. We're really aggitated at this crackhead by now and tell him he better pick the bag up cause we weren't going to. He grabs it and we push the fire exit door closed... take a deep breath and go back to our reliable, safe, soothing alcohol in our room. When our friends from the club come back, turns out one of them got their wallet lifted with their bank card, id, and 150 dollars in it.. we share stories and consider ourselves the luckier, we got a better story and all our cash hehe >.. The rest of the trip went well, Stanley park is beautiful... but this was a rough first night to say the least.

DAMN....is this sort of experience a regular thing in Canada? I mean, I've met my fair share of crack heads...but they hang out at bars and strip clubs....not behind the Holiday Inn. WTF!?!?!

obviously the entire country isn't like that...but downtown Vancouver is a pretty scary place if you don't know what you're doing..

yeah, i was pretty surprised myself. Vancouver is an awesome city and it was the first and only time we had any problems with anyone. I was thoroughly impressed by how clean the city was, just some of its people weren't quite as clean. I'll post some pictures of Stanely park, and the Butchart gardens on vancouver island when i get them back. And like i said, we didn't get robbed, the guy just tried to.. cities like san francisco and LA you really have to be careful, vancouver isn't bad at all.

I agree...I'm actually pretty surprised though that you think that Vancouver is clean. You should check out Calgary...it will seem like an operating room in comparison.

haha "come to calgary" hahahaha
Funny shit.. so what's up with getting weed from crackfiends? Next time just hit up Blunt Brothers.. you did go to Blunt Brothers didn't you? If I were american I'd be so stoked to hit up a restaurant full of openly tokin' tokers. Then I'd go upstairs and buy magic mushrooms from that store who's name I won't mention on the internet. Vancouver's pretty cool that way..

I fucking hate people like that. That has happened to me twice now. Both times it's just piece of shit street trash kids trying to scam people. People who's lives are worth so little that they actually risk toying with outsiders visiting their city. The last time it happened my friend and i were walking along Charles St at 3 am fucked up on meth. We were staying in a hotel room because we came to see Godspeed You Black Emperor play. We still don't remember why we were out on the streets at that hour to begin with, but this guy came ran by us quickly asking "you guys want hash?" we say no, he continues hassling us just as that guy did to you. As he's walking along hassling us, he keeps saying hello to friends, so we begin to pick up on the scam thats about to happen. Eventually, just to get the guy into a dark alley and away from the main street, i tell him i want some. We walk down an alley, he pulls it out, and right away i can tell it's fucking fake. It looked like lint for christs sake. I tell him to fuck off and get the fuck out of here, so he grabs my friends arm and says "gimmie your money or i'll fuck your friend up." It's generally a really stupid fucking idea to threaten my friends, expecially considering my friend is like 100 pounds and completely defenceless, and that i carry this with me at almost all times. The second he touches my friends arm, my brain turns off and i grab him by the throat, pull out my knife, put it to his throat and say "You let go of him right now or i cut a fucking hole in your neck." He lets go of my friend, my friend kicks him in the balls extremely hard, the guy falls to the ground crying, and we fucking RUN back to the hotel room. By the time we get back both of us are shaking like leaves because all our adrenaline has been used up.
But that experience has just caused a massive prejudice against people in a lower income bracket, permanently. Now i just think anyone that's poor that talks to me is just trying to fuck me over.
