Re: Am I an ass? [Re: mikeisapro]

I was raised in a family of religious (christian) nutbags.
I played their games up until the age of reason. When I was about 13-14 I decided I had enough of the bullshit and told them I wasn't going to church anymore.
They forced me to go anyway. Which just made me rebel against them and resent their entire religion.

Like the guy above me said, don't be fake. Be fucking real.

Christianity is SUPPOSED to be about love and acceptance.
But it's not. It's about judgement and thinking you are better than all non-christians, and having delusions.

Like Trip forever said, Tell him you respect his beliefs. But if he doesn't respect yours, what kind of one-sided shit is that?

you guys should understand a lot of your stupid religious relatives haven't done psychedelics and aren't trying to be dicks by wanting to "save" you.  they really think they can "save" you..

that said, it's usually best to just play along

my parents know i've questioned my faith many times before, and have a hard time grasping some of the principles.  i've told them straight up it's hard to know what to believe, but i don't tell them "you guys are stupid, fuck you and your god, it's all bullshit nonsense made up to keep idiots like you in line"  yea that'll make them feel great

i can STILL be relatively open about my more agnostic stance on life, and they will openly listen and not hate on what i understand to be true.  you just don't gotta be a dick about it.. they aren't TRYING to be asses by "converting you" or whatever.  they think they are helping

i never plan to tell any of my extended family or friends my true beliefs.  there's no point in breaking their hearts, for no gain to yourself other than them knowing you potentially won't be with them in the end.  it's kind of like a practical form of pascals wager which can be applied to real people and their feelings.  if you care about them a lot but there's no hope in really changing THEM, then you're probably best off leaving them with their ignorance if they won't leave it.

last service i went to with the family was last Christmas, and I took 1 hit of LSD.  i didn't say anything to them the whole time about any of my beliefs or their beliefs or let's do battle, i just did my thing, LSD, and went to church.  no wars needed.  just learning and good times and everything i could need or want.

ultimately, no OP i don't think you're an ass.  if you woulda stood up and yelled "Hey fuck you man, all you sheep in this church are idiots, i'm outie" after his little nudging glance at you for you to come up, then i'd say you're an ass.  i honestly think most Christians nowadays are kind of accepting of the fact that their beliefs seem more and more outdated by technology and everything.  i think a lot of people are pretty free to believe what they want.. just like i said, no need to be a dick about it

my religion is LSD, anyone wanna join?

yeah but thats why he's an asshole.

He's an asshole because he gave someone a concerning look on his face?

OP's interpretation of the event may not be true.

To extreme, thank you for helping prove my point. Them trying to help makes them an asshole, just because you guys think it's wrong what he's doing? Yes, it may be wrong, but that does not make him an asshole.

Yeah, and fuck showing up at these gatherings like you're one of them.

You are keeping it alive, you are part of the problem.

We are so afraid to outwardly deny religion in public in america, and it's fucking ridiculous. It needs to be openly denied.

My family asked me to go to church with them(they still think I'm Christian). So I went, and the service wasn't all that bad but...my cousin is the head pastor and while he was sharing the preaching today he kept staring at me.

And the service was about falling away from christ or whatever...

He even made a point of saying he'd been praying for someone really close to him or w/e and then he had an altar call for christians who are "backsliding". And he seemed genuinely emotional and like he actually cared...but I didn't go up.

I didn't feel shit  and I don't want to dedicate my life to something I don't believe in, he seemed pretty sad when I didn't go up though...

am I an ass for not going up?

this is obviously more of an OTD thread.  ask Paw about backsliding.

You quoted me saying "respect their beliefs, but if they don't respect yours what kind of one sided bullshit is that?". Then proceed to say fuck organized religions.

What kind of one sided bullshit is that not to respect their beliefs? Practice what you preach. (I'm quoting you, so I'm still respecting your beliefs )

I thought proper mannerisms in having a conversation are not talking about politics and religion, which is why I don't understand why people bring them up. I hate when people try to guilt trip me and make things awkward

The thing is the preacher always pull this bullshit "youre tired for work, but go anyways, why? Because there's a payday at the end, and trust me there's a payday for repenting your sins (heaven)" (I'm quoting that word for word)

As well as "you cant take an hour of your day for Jesus when he died for your sins?"

It's ironic, going to church makes me less Christian as I notice all the contradictions.

(I'm not Christian at all)

This statement sent me on a small, mini-trip.  Many thoughts were had in a very short amount of time.

Life.. just get's me sometimes.  That reminds me I was actually brought to tears like a week ago (last Sunday) after a strong acid trip and emotions and life and all that hit me at once.  I really can't get over how much more I appreciate the small things now, how much more I NOTICE the small things now, the big things now, everything.. can't even describe.

:awepreciation:

Yep.  I've grown up around many Christians, but the only label I could give them, if any, is ignorant.  Asshole definitely isn't one though.  They never used their beliefs to get on top of anyone else.  Only to try and make themselves and their loved ones better people, and to give them some sort of "purpose."  That's really the one thing I can't grasp, is how they can't find purpose in this life itself.  As if what we are experiencing right now isn't good enough?!?!?

Anyway, I'd gladly make any fundamentalist type that belittles others feel like an idiot.  But the ones who just don't KNOW, who can't KNOW.. just leave them be.  They don't mean any harm to you by wanting you in heaven with them.  If there really is a magic land after we die filled with unicorns and rainbows, I know I'd want all my closest family and friends with me too.  It's only natural - it's called love

I don't have a problem with religion at all, I just don't believe what he believes.

He wasn't forcing it on me, he was just trying to nudge me to go up - it felt like a guilt trip but he rarely does this to me, it's not like this is a daily thing.

Maybe he really felt it in his heart? Hell, I don't know.

Regardless I have no beef with religion whatsoever, I just don't believe it - and them knowing I don't believe it changes nothing other than making them feel like shit thinking I'm going to be burning in an eternal hell fire.

At least... That's the way I'm looking at it.

Religious love is more subtly hateful than you think, imo.

Misery loves company. To me, spreading filth and poisoning your family is not love, but it is done in the name of it.

That's my point that those quotes are retarded. Yes, Christians are ignorant.

So are the people who don't respect their beliefs as they feel it's wrong. (I think christianty is wrong, but I respect their beliefs)

Not all beliefs deserve respect. My example there is a lot less harmful than religious beliefs, too.

It's ignorant to not respect their retarded beliefs?  I don't respect idiocy.  But I respect their right to believe whatever foolishness they want.  I still love my family though even if they believe nonsense.

The way you see religion seems kinda similar to myself.

I've thought it would be a good idea at times to just outright deny religion as Mike is saying.. just like at times I've thought it would be beneficial to outright give everyone LSD.  Then after some more thinking.. maybe that isn't the answer..

Not everyone can handle powerful psychedelics.. and just as many can't handle knowing that after they die their consciousness as they know it may cease to exist.

Maybe a few generations from now this won't be a problem.  But for you and everyone else's parents parents (your grandparents, if anyone is fundamental as shit it's likely them) I think it's best to let some of them die off in peace before we bring such a change on everyone.

I put drugs and their legality on a VERY similar plane as religion and the laws regarding that.  We have one legal intoxicant, alcohol, which doesn't usually get too many people questioning the meaning of life.  The rest aren't illegal to protect us from the "demons inside the rest of the drugs" that the media or whatever will have you try and believe, but they are illegal because of racism and ignorance and fear.  When substances that shake you to your core start becoming more popular, religion should see a trend going the opposite direction.  People being rocked to their core on drugs shouldn't need religion to rock them at their core anymore

But again, is 2012 the right year for all this?  Patience is a virtue.

You think it's tough growing up around religion, even partially believing it, for 15-20 years.. well try being 80 years old and believing in Christ for 80 years then having it taken from you and told it's all bullshit right as you're developing Alzheimer's about to die.  That's just not good for that generation.

I think I'm still kinda high on MXE from last night
