Does Iodine kill spores?
    #16060138 -

Bleach, H2O2 and Iodine can be used with mycellium, but bleach and H2O2 kill spores. How about Iodine? Does it kill spores too?

None of them are sterilizing agents and all come in varying concentrations.  You need to say what you have and what you're trying to do to get an answer.

Thanks for your quick reaction, RR.

Well, what I have is a self made Spore Print - the only one I could make from my P. Cubensis growkit some years ago and I'm affraid it is not sterile (I saw a damn ant circling around it when I uncovered the aluminium foil). Also I never sprayed my shrooms with a H2O2 solution before taking the print, so I'm very unsure of the sterility of my Spore Print.

So I wonder if I could add some antibiotics or any other germ killer to the seringe I will make from that spore print.

So far the only options I found to preserve that strain are strain isolation techniques on Agar. I will go that path if I have to, though. I'm confident I will be able to, but I'm a total noob, my lab skills are very rusty so I will need a bit more hands on experience with Agar and sterile techniques before I'll feel up to it.

I'm looking for the easiest (not necessarily the quickest or cheapest) way, with the highest probability of success

No sporeprint is sterile or nothing would germinate, and the last thing you ever want to do is spray a cap with peroxide before printing.

A few years old sporeprint has very little chance of still having viable spores, especially if it was taken on paper and not stored properly.  I'd get fresh ones.

Taken on aluminium foil. Spore Print is 3 years old, I've read some people had viable spores even after 10 years... Worth a try, even if it is only for the experience

I'd start with a dilution series as done for colony counting... But yeah, possibly the spores are not even viable anymore... A spore print would be need to be stored very DRY, no?

And yes, I'll get some new spores soon...

Liars often brag.  I've never had a ten year old sporeprint be viable, and I'm pretty good at taking them.  Most of my original Redboy prints from 2004-2005 are now dead as they can be, and they were taken on foil in front of a hood, sealed tightly, and kept in a cool, dark place.
