Your Favorite Philosopher?
    #16048716 -

Who is your favorite philosopher and which of their works is your favorite?

I need to read more but at this point I particularly like a lot of what Sartre and Nietzsche have to say. I plan on reading more into Being and Nothingness but it seems to be a very thick read. How about you?

Sartre on conciousness: "a being such that in its being, its being is in question in so far as this being implies a being other than itself."

Thomas jefferson and who doesn't know his work though the decoration of independence isn't the only thing he's done for America. I also like some of the earlier presidents.

Albert Einstein and Nicolas Tesla were also very cleaver people. I'm not sure if this is what you'd think of a philosopher but I haven't even heard of Terence Mckenna before maybe a month ago and a lot of their literature was very philosophical.

I also shouldn't forget Thomas Edison, oh shit shit and that one guy who invented the Cotton gin.

Nietzsche is awesome. If you want a modern philosopher check out Daniel Dennet.

Always really enjoyed Wittgenstein and Quine... and David Chalmers makes me laugh.

I don't give two shits about Nietzsche. I get it, and I understand the appeal -- just not my bag. I've just never cared much for any of the transcendentalists.

For the purpose of this thread, I'd assume it's anyone commonly recognized as being a philosopher. If you look them up on wikipedia, and it refers to them as a philosopher, then it's safe to say they're commonly recognized as one.

Two of my top picks right there.

Others I would add to the list are Wittgenstein, Spinoza, Hume, and Dogen Zenji.

Tr00th, I don't remember seeing any arguments from Chalmers that weren't circular.

Is anyone commonly recognized as being a philosopher if we're looking at humans in general? I'd venture to guess that the majority of people could not name one philosopher.

The philosophy in Buddhism in general is my favorite, but I also like Ayn Rand... but I don't fall into the trap of following either to a t.

Anyone can be a philosopher I mean I just named a bunch of people that aren't typically referred to being a philosopher but I bet nobody would argue that they weren't. They wrong some pretty philosophical shit but non of them are actually known for being philosophers.

Not really... but I don't imagine they'd be too interested in this thread. The old guy three houses down might have a fantastic outlook on life, but for the sake of brevity, I'm guessing OP wanted to limit the discussion to those recognized by the philosophy community.

And... ummm.... fuck Nietzsche!

I would. Tesla is one of my favorite historical figures of all time. He's actually on my computer background. So props good sir. But a philosopher, he is not.

Albert Camus.

One of the few philosophers with the guts to confront reality for what it is and still come away with a philosophy that affirms the value of the human experience.

Nietzsche 2nd place for just making so much damn sense.

Not imo, he looked and then slowly backed out of the room scared shitless and so "affirmed" life. Of course I only read Myth but his conclusions seemed wrongheaded to me at the time but it was many many years ago. Maybe I missed something.

I'd recommend reading The Plague if you want to read about life affirmation in the face of the horrors of reality.

He wrote Myth when he was young and a bit more sensitive.

Can't really fault a guy for being scared about life to begin with. Life is scary if you can't handle the inevitability of your own death.

Give me a quote as to why one affirms life in the face of horrors and if it sounds plausible I'll check it out.

I don't fault anyone for fearing death or impermanence. I don't find fault with anyone fearing anything.

"No, we should go forward, groping our way through the darkness, stumbling perhaps at times, and try to do what good lay in our power. As for the rest, we must hold fast, trusting in the divine goodness, even as to the deaths of little children, and not seeking personal respite."

"... once the faintest stirring of hope became possible, the dominion of the plague was ended."

"... if there is one thing one can always yearn for and sometimes attain, it is human love."

"... what we learn in time of pestilence: that there are more things to admire in men than to despise."

Just some I found. It's hard to quote the book out of context unless you understand that the plague itself represents the meaninglessness and horror of life. What a reader might get the most from is the internal development of the protagonist, who over the course of the novel comes to believe that only in rejecting despair and nihilism can a person's life have any value. But you'd have to read the whole book to pick up on that.

Nietzsche ... cool books, but his arguments are fueled by hatred and egotism, not reason.

Dennett is a complete dumbass. :sorry:

As for me, hm ... Lao Tzu. Spinoza. Kant. Schopenhauer.

trusting in the divine goodness, even as to the deaths of little children,

IMO more blah blah blah escapism but to each his own. And I appreciate there may be more to actually reading the book in it's entirety but I think that I'd get the same hit as I did with his other book.

As to life having meaning that is totally subjective and imo anyone within any belief system can give meaning to their life and do unless they choose suicide which is hardly a cowards way out in most instances.

The reason imo that many people choose to believe in unproven things like divine goodness  as a way to create meaning is due to FEAR of meaninglessness, fear of impermanence and fear of death. It may work but it must be admitted, again imo, that it is the cowards way of preserving their life and their sanity. Not all of us can manage to do that.

So I'll suggest these books to you by Ernest Becker. Denial of Death-The Birth and Death of Meaning- Escape from Evil.
