BitTorrent Crackdown Center Prepares to Punish Pirates -what's ur thoughts
    #16042210 -

http://torrentfreak.com/bittorrent-crackdown-center-prepares-to-punish-pirates-120402/

In a few months millions of BitTorrent users in the United States will be actively monitored as part of an agreement between the MPAA, RIAA and all the major ISPs. Those caught sharing copyright works will receive several warning messages and will be punished if they continue to infringe. Today the center responsible for administering the scheme announced its Executive Board, which surprisingly enough doesn’t include any neutral executives.

Starting this summer, the Center for Copyright Information (CCI) will start to track down ‘pirates’ as part of an agreement with all major U.S. Internet providers.

Last year the parties agreed on a system through which copyright infringers are warned that their behavior is unacceptable. After six warnings ISPs may then take a variety of repressive measures, which includes slowing down the offender’s connection and temporary disconnections.

The new plan was announced under the name ‘Copyright Alerts‘ last year and will be implemented by all parties by July 12, 2012. As this deadline nears, the CCI today unveiled several key players who are going to lead the group.

Surprisingly, the Executive Board is exclusively made up of representatives from the RIAA, MPAA and the ISPs.

RIAA’s Steven Marks has been appointed as Vice Chairman and General Counsel, MPAA’s Marianne Grant is the Senior Vice President, Comcast’s Alan Lewine is Senior Counsel, Verizon’s Thomas Dailey is Chairman, Viacom’s Daniel Mandil is Associate General Counsel and AT&T’s Brent Olson is Vice President of Public Policy.

For an organization that aims to educate Internet users in a responsible way, consumer rights representatives are completely absent from the Executive Board.

However, the Advisory Board does include public rights advocates including Jerry Berman, the Chairman of the Internet Education Foundation and founder of the Center for Democracy and Technology, and Gigi Sohn, co-founder of Public Knowledge.

The latter says it wasn’t an easy decision to accept the position. Sohn is especially worried about the threat of Internet disconnections.

“I still have concerns about some of the points in the agreement. One of the most prominent is the threat that consumers could have their access to the Internet cut off,” he says.

“I will ask at the appropriate time for the ISPs to promise not to interpret the agreement’s ‘temporary restriction’ provision as allowing for suspension of user Internet accounts. This provision is most troubling because an individual could lose access to the Internet just on the basis of suspicion alone.”

The CCI will be headed by copyright and consumer protection expert Jill Lesser, who will serve as Executive Director. Unlike some members of the advisory board, Lesser is delighted with her appointment and is eager to start sending out the first batch of alerts.

“I am excited to lead CCI as it begins this constructive effort to reduce and deter online copyright infringement in a way that is centered on education and deterrence, not punishment,” she said. “This unprecedented collaboration demonstrates that when content providers and distributors work together we can protect copyright and empower consumers at the same time.”

As expected, CCI is mainly focusing on the educational component of the scheme, but in essence it’s deterrence through punishment.

While we now know a little bit more about the people who will lead CCI, the organization has yet to announce the company that will be responsible for tracking down millions of BitTorrent pirates. Last year sources told TorrentFreak that DtecNet got the lucrative contract, but that was the last we heard of it.

One thing’s for certain, the company that gets the contract will have to be reviewed by an independent expert to see if their evidence gathering techniques pass the scrutiny test. But even when the end-stage tracking evidence is solid, there will always be many wrongful accusations, not least because people run unsecured Wi-Fi networks and ISPs make mistakes.

Those wrongfully accused Internet subscribers have the right to call for an independent review at the cost of a $35 filing fee. These disputes will then be handled by the American Arbitration Association, CCI announced today.

While the CCI is confident that the alerts are an effective way of deterring online piracy we have our doubts. For one, the monitoring system is relatively easy to bypass through a proxy or VPN. Secondly, the multi-million dollar plan only covers a few of the many sources of online piracy.

The millions of U.S. Internet users who download via cyberlockers and streaming portals are not affected by this agreement at all, as these downloads are impossible for third parties to track.

Time will tell who’s right.

Six warning, really?

I wish there was a study done to see if  the people who use torrents would actually buy music and movies if peer to peer sharing was actually disabled. I know I would never put the money out, and id wager most other torrent users wouldn't either.

Even though I think it would be gay if they actually could do something about piracy I would understand. Mainly private trackers I couldn't care less about those.

i don't care about them taking care of piracy... just stop making and promoting gay-ass music then telling all the good worthwhile music artists "OH U CAN'T DO THAT!"  :harhar: and taking away their ability to promote and make the music they want.

Wow...it seems that the consensus in this thread is that it's okay to steal someone else's work...

Personally, I am glad that they are doing this.  It won't stop piracy, but hopefully they can make an example out of a few people...

There really is no excuse for pirating shit..

I wasn't even weighing in on the copyright infringement or intellectual theft or whatever. That's for each person to decide.

I'm just saying that it's very doubtful I would ever buy music again.

I have no issues buying tickets to see my favorite artists perform live.

Allegedly...

Truthfully, I don't even recall what that was about...I sent a PM to the dude but I assume he no longer logs on...

Doesn't matter...If I didn't send him something that he paid for...I was wrong for doing that...I don't recall it, but I don't deny it either..

None of that changes the fact that stealing is morally reprehensible.

sure there is. i don't feel like wading through tons of shit to find good music, (which i can't find regardless, anyway) so i go online and search for it... and i come across good music i like... but then guess what... it's either out of print, or it's gotta be ordered and shit... i ain't gonna do that with the thousand's of albums that i have without going through a ton of BS. i have to take my slow ass fucking time buying the shit i want and it's expensive. so i think you don't get the picture.

the industry is fucked. why do you think people are pirating movies now? cause they suck worse then ever, now. it's useless to resist, because they want to to put more money into a movie for buying power? fuck them; what about good films? and good music? and good anything anymore? fuck them.

they can eat shit and die, for all i care. hell, they'd think the same of me. all because of something you should be doing anyway... going against the grain is the only way artists can ever innovate. did you ever realize that? that you stagnate if you don't innovate? it's not good to steal other people's music... that includes COMPANIES stealing music.

THE ARTISTS made the music... it belongs to them. not some consortium of artist thugs; no, i mean, you belong to the music you put your time and effort into. the money and the power and the glory and shit is all supported by traitors, feel good wanna-be poser fuckheads who just want to exploit the next trend... be a part of something bigger then themselves, but yet it kills any sort of dignity in music. fuck the business. i want the pleasure of music. i want the right. fat-cat music business can suck my left nut.

Sounds like rationalization to me...

It's no different than walking out of Home Depot with a wrench in your pocket.  Someone made that wrench...some dude in china making 10 cents a day...is he being exploited by home depot?  Probably...it doesn't make it okay for you to steal from home depot.

Artists should put there music out for free, especially big name artists. All I hear about is how costly it is for these people to make a CD. I have heard many say that they make almost no money off of record sales. So whats the point? There are countless other ways they can make money. You cant use bitTorrent to download a clothing line, or bottle of liquor. I understand that the music is property of the artist, but its just the way I feel.

i'm not stealing from anyone. stealing a wrench from Home Depot mean a 10 cent item was replaced twenty minutes later when it was found missing. some Chinese guy didn't get payed because of me? no, he didn't get payed because of his shittastical job, and country; and Home Depot didn't lose much but some (what 6-10 dollar?) tax rate and a cheap wrench.

steal a CD is even cheaper... why do you think kids do it? because DUR it's a fucking bullshit scam; and if you're like me, going to a  HM-fucking V and looking for something, you can't find shit but either crap that makes me want to vomit upon sight, or shit that's typical and maybe i've heard already like a hundred times like fuckin' Tool, and shit... i already have all their albums.

so what do i have to do? either i order it in or i go to a big-ass record store and it cost a shit-ton for one rare CD, out of thousands of AWESOME music that doesn't even see the light of day anymore... for a piece of plastic?

no. you don't get it. it's not the plastic i want... it's music. now adays, Itunes makes it alot easier though to just download music... i don't a credit line though, so... i can't start purchasing any of the MANY albums until then so... LUCKILY i already have downloaded alot of this shit, like years ago... but i admit i have like three folders of newer music, that... well, is considerably un-listened to, as of yet, so i don't know exactly what i like... but some of the new stuff is good stuff that i'll be buying at some point... cause bands like Need New Body can... well, if i had a thousands of dollars, i'd want to fund their next album. they make music that blows my mind, not this underwhelming crap they make nowadays.

so :nonono:
