System Preferences > Display > Detect Displays/Set Number of Displays (?) this would be for Mac but Windows/PC could probably follow similar directions.

So you want to have a different background on each monitor... Good question, I have wondered the same thing?

After searching the web I found DisplayFusion and was able to set a different picture for my background on each of my monitors. http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/

Sometimes I put my media player (xmbc http://xbmc.org/download/) in my second monitor and play music with the tripy visual thingy at full screen so it looks cool.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. DisplayFusion has a free and pro version, the free one has the different image on each monitor enabled so I think the sotfware will work long term.

xmbc media player is kinda tricky to figure out, so I would watch a couple how to videos http://youtu.be/fXS933EECQU

Don't use clone and use the other setting and you can set each background... You shouldn't need any 3rd party software.
