are anti-psychotics detrimental to schizophrenia recovery?

due to the fact the brain creates more dopamine receptors to compensate for the dopamine blockage created by these drugs thus causing a hypersensitivity to dopamine?

edit: any thoughts?

There is no schizophrenia recovery, and the medicines in schizophrenics are given indefinitely.

If you are a schizophrenic, and you might be trANce, this means you have a lifelong chronic illness, for which lifelong maintenance therapy with antipsychotic drugs is indicated, with occasional temporary increases in the dose to combat psychotic flareups.

i would not say im a schitzophrenic. but i probably do have some type of schitzo disorder. i do not hallucinate or hear things and shit like that. but i am trully MAD.

Well I'm not saying you ARE, trANce, but hearing some things you told in threads here and there, there might be the possibility you are.

Psychosis is as much a medical condition as a ruptured disk, its not something that says anything about someone as a person, just about the challenges they face.

but to our understanding dopamine is "bad" for schizophrenics right? and anti-psychotics work by blocking the receptors, which the brain responds by increasing the receptors, so prolonged use of anti-psychotics actually cause more harm then the diagnosed disorder would of caused over the same period of time, indicating that schizophrenic's dont actually have a chemical imbalance, the drugs create one.

studies show before the introduction of psychiatric drugs in the 1950's schizophrenics fared better on a social level and had less re-hospitalization  then they do today. and also patients who stabilized on drugs then discontinued them fared better then patients who stay on them over a 5 year period

schizophrenics in third world countries, without access to drugs fare better the patients in our rich countries who take drugs reliably, wouldnt this be an indication tto the drugs causeing some of these problems

the drugs work as a temporary mask,  a band-aid effect, and can be doing more harm then good for relatively mild cases

now im bad at remembering stuff and citing it accurately but im half way through this book, i suggest if you can obtain a copy to read it, it is really interesting

im quitting ssri's because of this book, these drugs cause more problems then they solve

it talks about ssri's ,anti-phychotics and benzos, and how they actually wire the brain for the worse

indicated by who?

does increasing a dose every few years sound like a smart idea? or does it sound like addiction?

could psychiatrist desperately wanted these drugs to look like "real doctors" who have penicillin and insulin ,so they take up prescribe drugs that may work

same people who invented these drugs started to question their effectiveness 20-30 years later

The problem with schizophrenia is that the disease often leads a person to think that the meds are what is making them sick...so they get off the meds and become really, really sick.

It's hard to swallow, but if you're schizophrenic, you really need to let go of the notion that you know what's best for you...most likely you don't.

it is addiction, but being addicted to antipsychotics is supposedly better for some people than being insane

but i think i am schizo, i dont think i know whats best, but the research shows these drugs can do some serious harm, and should only be used very short term., i told my doctor i might be schizo, but he didnt label me , he just told me i was depressed and put me on ssri's . i didnt understand at the time, but now i think i get it, my sickness is so mild, and he knew the potential devastating effects, and he probably just saved me from having fucked up dopimine receptors which would of increased my symptoms over the long term, resulting in my eventual re hospitalization

OP, nobody here has demonstrated any knowledge of scz in their posts Just so you know you won't find much except for misinformation in the pub and this thread

I suggest sending a PM to Cateyes / Kensho. Hes is a very knowledgeable scz and as far as i'm aware he controls it through nutrition effectively and has totally dropped his antipsychotics. He has lots of good posts you can read through too.

Scz is not a very well understood 'disease'(I woudn't even call it a disease) and every case of it is unique. It is not necessarily a life long disorder either.

The vast majority of 'information' you will find about it is guesswork and misinformation spread by the pharmeceutical industry all the way on down the chain to doctors and patients. The modern medical system has completely failed and only taken steps backwards with this particular ailment

I believe anti-psychotics have been severely detrimental to me.  But I think I'm addicted to them now so it'll be a while before I'm back to normal.  I'd much rather have neurotic thinking than be lobotomized by anti-psychotics.

from what ive read, withdrawal and after effects can be intense, if you quit now you could have years of episodes before they start to subside, the average being patients start doing better then the control group after 5 years

I was on zyprexa for about a year until it started to fuck me up. I had severe restless leg syndrome for about a month after stopping.

ellaborate more on the benzos part...

I dont want my brain to be fucked lol I only use benzos every once in a while though
