Musicians--what mics are you using?
    #15896042 -

right now I am using a Shure Beta 87A for acoustic guitar and a Shure Beta 58A for vocals. I also have a Shure SM-81 condenser mic for general instruments/guitar, a Shure SM-57 for utility, and a piece of shit Apex that I don't use.

usually 50 to 100, but beyond that it gets a little interesting to try and decypher what is coherent and what is not..

I've actually used a Rockband microphone for recording once. It actually didn't come out too bad after some audio processing

I don't use microphones to record though. My set-up works with everything being recorded through direct line / line-in. I suspect I'll need a microphone eventually though when I want to start recording vocals or something like that. Maybe a field recorder would work better for my purposes, but I'll be checking this thread for mic recommendations anyway

Just a play on words..

Last time me and the homies I jam with had anything beyond singing at the top of our lungs to be heard over the sound, this cat somehow figured out how to use a head phone set in reverse. I watched him fiddle around with head phones that had a quarter inch stereo jack. He plugged it into the input of a guitar amp and turned up some knob and then he was rapping through the headphones. I had no idea you could do that, but apparently you can!

We're looking to get an affordable mic for the band so i'm looking forward to hearing some legit responses from you, and everyone else

a vocal mic?  Then see if you can get a Shure Beta 58A.  they are about 150 bux.  Next down would be a Shure SM-58, which are about $100.  But the beta 58 is kick ass for live vocals.

Starfire I'm thinking about getting a shure dynamic mic mostly for multi purpose recording. Something that will sound great on vocals but not pick up room noise and reflections so much as a condenser, something I can also use to mic an acoustic guitar or electric guitar cab. I was thinking about the beta 57a, have any experience with that, to compare to the mics you own?

Right now I'm recording with a cheap old shure dynamic, not a 58, something cheaper, I think it's a PE85-l. It's an old piece of crap, but sounds decent and I'm getting workable mixes with it. I wanted to go for a condenser but now I'm thinking I can do everything I want with a good shure dynamic and it will be more versatile, and of course cheaper.

the beta 57 may be good, its pretty much a utility mic.  For micing instruments live, or cabinets though, the SM-57 is a standard, you should probably have one of these no matter what you do.  It is great for vocals though.  Handles everything else (That doesnt mean it is terrible for vocals also)
