Your best bet is really anything south of Chain Bridge during the warmer months will hold tons of fish.  They are also upstream quite a bit near Great Falls and all the whitewater but they prefer the warm shallow coves in and around the entrance to tidal creeks.

You're pretty likely to catch at least 1 if you're bass fishing all day.  As far as lures I would throw texas or wacky rigged worms at least 8".  Green and pumpkinseed work really well.  You can use a pretty agressive retrieve, the snakehead will have no problem hitting it.  I dont use frogs much as the cover here consists more of downed trees, old piers, rocks, bridges etc.

Don't forget that there are also huge largemouth and catfish in the river (youtube 'the spoils huge largemouth' or something).  The spot in the youtube video is maybe 3 miles south of dc on the river.  Its where an old bridge used to me so there are 45' pilings off the main current, huge fish around there.

I want to take a trip down to MD this summer to catch some snakeheads, they're such bad ass fish. You have any tips on where to fish for them? Like what kind of habitat do they like? I've read that they're a big fan of frog lures. Also, what are the laws like regarding permits? I'd be coming down from NJ so I don't have an MD permit.

#1. Always kill any snakeheads you happen to catch

F that yo, I'm gonna keep it in an aquarium. Or eat it. Depends on how big it is.

We don't have snakeheads around here, but we have these bad boys.

Fun to catch, but a bitch to release.

Not my pics btw.

Alligator gar. Evil little bastards. They can even live on land.
This guy I used to fish with would take pliers and break their mouth
before releasing them.

What the fuck, why? People here cut them off lines which is bad enough. Anyway, apparently they taste great so I hope I catch one again.

He breaks their mouth so they cant eat and die.
They're known as pests around here. I dont think
I've heard of anyone eating em.

I've heard someone tell me gator gar tastes similar to pickerel, but I haven't tasted them myself.  They're supposedly really bony and a pain in the ass to clean.  Never kept any, always released them.  They're fun to fight when they get big though, you'll get a big one right up to the boat and it'll take off for another round.  The biggest one I caught was around 4 1/2 feet.

Dude they aren't pests that an urban legend. if i were you i'd get you to get him to stop. its fucked up that hes doing that really. Just because of the perception of them doesnt mean they should be fucked over. It would be a different story if they were creek chub, but those are top tier predators. Your gonna do a lot of damage to an ecosystem going on like that.

Yeah, Id'e rather not see harm done to any creature,
but I never see the guy anymore. He also cuts the necks of
turtles he catches to, but he really is one of the
nicest guys I know. He just one of those real old
school guys.

Hmm sounds like an interesting fella. Normally you would automatically think someone like that is an asshole, but i guess there are really cool people (which are the type of people who would be fishing in the first place) who do shit that isn't the best (like breaking snouts, and cutting throats). Still this type of activity is undoubtedly detrimental to the ecosystem. I guess thats just the nature of evolution though; new predators proceed in new ways to create a subspecies which is resistant. Perhaps ali gars will learn not to bite fake bait, but niggaz gotta eat.
I Guess it just depends on whether or not you consider humans a part of the food chain or not.

I'd like to find the moron who introduced the snakehead to the United States and beat his face in.

Gumby, if you catch any.  Kill on site.

Like someone said, the original scare wasn't fully necessary. Scientists worried that they would spread like wildfire and overtake everything and kill our native fish... Turns out that wasn't the case. They found their niche in the ecosystem and aren't spreading much faster than other fish, that's why the hype died down.

Regardless, if I catch a big one, I'm gonna eat it. I gotta see why these Asian folks wanted to import them so badly for food. If I catch a small one, I'm gonna keep it in a tank(I kept them before the ban, they're really cool aquarium fish). If it gets to big for me to handle, it's going in the freezer. Rest assured though, any snakehead I catch isn't going back in the water.

They are invasive.  End of story.

Unfortunately or fortunately for people that like to catch them they are here to stay.  No amount of killing your catch is going to make much an impact, you might as well take them home to eat but its not making a difference in the long term.

There are much more damaging ecosystem altering species of the flora variety such as water lettuce and hydrilla.  They on the other hand have really put a dent on all the native species by choking out light and oxygen levels.

The thing to take home about snakehead is that they aren't as hysterically invasive as people led them to believe.  It was just a wet dream for the media, oooo they can cross land protect your pets and children

EDIT:  The guy mentioned that breaks the snouts of alligator gar that have been around for 100 million years and demonized by clueless rednecks in the last 300 needs to have his jaw broken and his teeth smashed out

I never understood why people kill fish like that.  Gar can fight really hard and are fun to catch.  I had a friend that fished around Cumberland Island and he and his brother kept a baseball bat on the boat to beat the shit out of rays and other "trash" fish they didn't want to eat.
