Go back a page to see the invasive giant fucking snakehead fish...

People worried they would outcompete the largemouth bass population but it turns out they don't.

They tend to stay up in the shallows in the creeks off the main river eating smaller baitfish and shad.

Thankfully they didn't destroy the local food chain in the last 6 years and fisheries experts say they are finding a niche where they won't outcompete others.

The potomac now is known for huge 80+ pound blue catfish and huge fucking smallmouth bass annd giant snakehead  not to mention during the right season 50" stripers, american shad, gizzard shad, tiger muskie, walleye, perch and many others.  Its a cornucopia of good shit.  Anyone living in northern virginia or maryland should take advantage south of Great Falls on the Potomac..theres even huge Gar and the occasional Sturgeon caught every once in a while.  Its like the wild wild west of fishing, you never know what your going to catch.  I bet bull sharks in the early 1900s used to chase shad and striper upstream where the rivers only 50 yards wide, shit is primeval.

not my pics, from where i fish though

Holy fuck! that small mouth is INSANE!! They don't get that big up here thats for sure.

That's really cool that they might find a niche without fucking shit up, but surely they have to be replacing something. Maybe they will just reduce the number of other species without completely destroying the population though. If anything it sounds like they are just adding another species to the river, thats pretty cool man!

Thats the high end. Those are all about 29 to 32 pounds. They get up to close to 40 but anything over 30 is a nice fish. Average salmon on lake ontario is about 22 pounds

I might head down to the river as well to do some bait fishing.. But its pretty windy and its hard to tell if you get a bite with the line moving constantly

Nah, was in Florida at the time.  Lots of little lakes out in the national forests that nobody fishes harbor monster bass like that one, though it's really uncommon to catch them.

In America we have a similar fish species called "crappie", doesn't seem to be of the same family though.

Northern Snakhead...Invasive species from asia introduced around 2006 to the Potomac river area.  Very aggressive and known to grow more than one meter in the wild.

Me and a little baby

My friend with a 34" monster

These both hit big 8" senko worms while bass fishing a creek branching off the Potomac just south of Washington, DC.

look forward to catching a 50 incher in the next few years, they are known to grow up to 1.5 meters.  They are like giant pike that come to surface for air and are extremely territorial when it comes to their young.  If you pull a buzz-bait through a school of youngsters the mother will destroy the shit out of the bait.

Good thing is that people freaked the fuck out about them hurting the migratory shad and striper populations along with the native bass but they are proving to be much less harmful to the local food chain than previously thought.

Maybe I'll get a realll big one this spring, they are voracious feeders and grow quick.

I want to take a trip down to MD this summer to catch some snakeheads, they're such bad ass fish. You have any tips on where to fish for them? Like what kind of habitat do they like? I've read that they're a big fan of frog lures. Also, what are the laws like regarding permits? I'd be coming down from NJ so I don't have an MD permit.
