i majored in plant/soil science, because the uni i went to didn't have a specific horticulture focus.

if you're looking to get into the agricultural job market and don't want to be a sales rep or tractor driver, i'd recommend focusing on the education end, the forestry end, or coupling GIS as a minor/secondary major.  there are many forestry tech. and other forestry positions currently open in the US, and as an ag teacher, if you can't FIND a job, you could always try to MAKE a job by teaming up with a school who wants a program and getting grant money

that being said, if you're in an area, or know of an area to relocate to, with a big and/or booming agricultural market, just having a hort. degree will probably be good enough.

i've spent the last 2.5/3 years working on a small-scale farm/large-scale garden, growing fruits, nuts, perennials/annuals, herbs, etc... and i'm currently unemployed on the hunt, and not able to find any ag jobs that i qualify for, despite the experience and high gpa/recommendations

How hard is it to find a job in this field? I'm only part-time in school right now but thinking about going full time for horticulture.

Admittedly I have not worked with plants much outside of my own home-- growing a few varieties here and there, cactus, etc. But I have a knack for growing things, and I've had the idea in my head since high school I wanted to be a botanist, and it has always stuck.
