I'd be pissed if someone raped someone close to me, and on my tax dollars, was playing Xbox and living reasonably well.  Prison is punishment, not rehabilitation.  Fuck that noise.

Only if the rehabilitation aspect doesn't encroach on the punishment aspect.  Going back to my example, if someone close to me was raped, I want that motherfucker that raped my daughter in the worst prison possible, treated as inhumanely as possible, for as long as possible.

Punishment doesn't work. That's not practical on a societal level.

Hence, how fucked up America is.

my motivation to stop serious crime is easy, i wont be this lucky next time, if i get locked up again it will be stage one most of the time and maybe stage two at the end, and fuck that i dont want to sit in a hole for a year.. so its the right ratio of punishment/rehabilitating to keep me out of here

inmates are in custody according to the level scale here.
Level 1. community corrections aka 1/2 way house.
Level 2. minimum  security - more than likely processed with level 3 thru 5..
Level 3. medium security - more than likely housed with level 4's
Level 4. high security - this level inmate will likely be dropped to a level 3 after processing. Level 4s are usually inmates that are returns like parole offenders.
Level 5. MAX security, 5's are mostly death rows, RHU/HOLE status 24hr day lock in.


Level O1M state inmate usually an outside the wall worker, farm hand, dorm style living. Level 01M may have video games.
Level 02M state inmate that can leave the inside jail and work outside, must return indoors for lock up. Both these levels will never have Life serving inmates.

Level 1,2,3, can have tvsets, musical instrument and art supplies.
Level 4 may have Tv sets, no instruments, no art supplies.
LEVEL 5 will be lucky to have 1 hour rec a day, They have no tvset, no personal clothing other than state issue which will be limited to 3ea socks, unders, tshirts. Movement of a level 5 inmate will require shackles, belly button cuffed, and a orange jump suit. min 2 guards per movement.

A life inmate can be reduced to a level 2, and hold jobs inside the jail where tools could be used as weapons. IE: correctional industries like making clothing, tools, wheeled chairs ect..

..but my desires may not be good for society as a whole, regardless of how right or wrong they may be, morally. Forgive the facetious delivery, but hopefully you get the point I'm trying to make.

It is understandable to feel for a victim, especially one you know personally, and/or to feel anger toward a perpetrator. But those are personal feelings. And if those feelings affect others, they are feelings that caused selfish actions, just like the ones of the perpetrator in the first place. Your anger may be righteous and your pain understandable...but that does not mean that acting on it (in harming another) is in ANYONE's best interest, and in reality, may just bring more pain into the world.

And that's exactly why the determination of correctional measures shouldn't be left to victims or their loved ones. An eye for an eye works only if you want to live in a martial society.

punishment works when it's used appropriately

if you get convicted and are executed then you wont be a repeat offender

Seems this method of prisoner rehabilitation actually lowers risk for re-offending instead of raising it. Which doesnt seem that far out, trying to correct a behavior problem through depraving the individual of common freedoms only creates hatred and contempt towards society, excarberating the problem instead of solving it.

Can you imagine giving those nice items to the animals that live in our prisons, they would destroy that stuff in less than 24 hours.

The norwegian prisons are full Norwegians, and that is a big difference from what makes up a US prison population. Norwegians and dutch prisons are full of more civilized people, US prisons are full of gangs of different cultures and races, pure animals in many cases.
