"Prison for Profit"
    #4447030 - 07/24/05 02:20 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

ok, I hear a lot about "prison for profit", and I'd like to believe it, but before I do I want to know exactly how it works.

After hearing people reference in various discussions about law enforcement, the war on drugs, and other things, this is the image I have of "prison for profit":

The government gives the "prison company" a certain amount of money per prisoner they house. The prison chooses how much of this goes back into the system (pays for food, gaurds, etc in prison) and how much goes into someone's pocket.

Am I close at all? Please educate me so next time this topic comes up, I can have an educated opinion about it, rather than just spouting "prison for profit, man" without really knowing what it means (as I suspect many others are doing)

Its a government whore house. To keep an inmate for 25 years it will cost the tax payers about 2 billion dollars. Ill patients alone cost about 64,000 anualy in specialised health care. Then we pay for gaurds overtime.

It's still dark when inmate No. 41465 wakes up to begin her day. The shrunken 82-year-old changes from her pajamas and pink house coat into jeans and a denim shirt labeled California Prisoner and begins her drill: breakfast at 6, sack lunch pickup at 6:30, infirmary at 7, where she acquires an ankle chain, belly chains and handcuffs. She then hobbles to a van for the 40-minute ride to Riverside Hospital for dialysis beginning at 8. Helen Loheac suffers from chronic renal failure, a condition that she figures costs the state $436,000 a year, not counting the two $24.75-an-hour armed corrections officers who guard her, all 5 feet and 90 pounds, for up to eight hours a day three times a week.
