my new pre-workout/morning coffee
    #15516814 -

so I've been making a little concoction as of late, for before my workouts, and occasionally before work...

I make a pot of really dark, strong coffee, which I'd usually just drink black... but then I thought up something that might seem a little weird.

instead of drinking it separately, why not just add big scoop of my vanilla mutant mass pro weight gainer powder straight to my coffee?

I did it and it is fucking delish... gives you the energy boost from caffeine, all the nutrients you'll need for an intense workout/physical job, and tastes great to boot!

I also add 3 grams of creatine.

I wish I woulda thought of this before!

I know it sounds weird, but try it in place of cream and sugar if you're a coffee drinker... you'll prolly be suprised how good it is.

If I'm in a rush, a large cup of instant coffee with said ingredients added works just as well.

Not sure if straight whey would work as well, the texture might be to thick for coffee... I might try it next time I buy a tub though.

Protein powder, the biggest sham of "getting big and strong"

Honestly that sounds really awful tasting. I'll just take my coffee black thanks. The creatine is a good idea though, thanks. Never thought about just throwing that in there. Caffeine and creatine would be a good mix for a morning workout.

I'm a 100% believer that you are completely wasting your money on protein powder though.

Just eat some eggs and toast... eat some real food with vitamins in it. Not junk that does nothing for you.

Protein powder is not junk! Whey powder is the fastest absorbing(or at least up there) protein complexes known to animals/humans.

I was never one to consume creatine or whey powder considering I eat a bountiful amount of leafy greens and lean meants, but now that I think about it my coffee could use some sprucing up. Ephedra and ginkgo added to straight coffee would be uber powerful for a preworkout energy shot. If anyone's curious I can post a experience report on how well it works when I give it a go.

Not only is this barely coherent, it just flat out isn't true. Protein powder is the most useful supplement you can use.

Not really. I'm saying it's a big waste of money. Supplementation.... for what? The fuck do you need extra protein for. Eat some eggs and have some toast. What, you think your body needs to get protein right away or you won't recover as fast? You think our body doesn't store protein temporarily or something?

A large male who lifts weights does not even NEED more than 100 grams of protein in a day, infact, it's excessive unless you're like fucking 250 lbs of sheer mass. 60 grams of protein is pretty much all you need for an active male who weighs about 160-170 lbs, about 80 for 200+ and 100+ for 250+

Please, you think taking a 20-30 gram scoop of protein is necessary? Proven to be effective?

I've never even HEARD of a protein deficiency here in America, I didn't even know about the symptoms of it until I took my first human nutrition class and learned a lot more a few classes later.

It's such a sham. Your body needs carbs and fats mostly, even after working out it's all your body really needs, 5-10 grams of protein is more than enough.

Prove me I'm wrong... from everything I've found out from taking classes and reading books, there is NO need for such a thing. Just another way to market out protein and make good money off of it. I don't trust supplemental "studies" because it isn't regulated at all by the FDA.

Show me a peer reviewed study/article with details about the "ahem" effectiveness of protein powder (or should I just say, protein.......)

You are better off eating foods with high quality fats, carbs, proteins that contain loads of vitamins. Eating some shit called protein and calling it healthy is a joke.

The only people on the planet that could truly benefit from having an amass of extra protein is someone who is on steroids. They need a lot more protein than someone who isn't raging on teste.

you kidding me?... whey protein is probably the most useful supplement out there.

and I'm not talking about whey powder anyway, I'm talking weight gainer.. it's a lot more than just protein

alanine
arginine
aspartic acid
cystine
glutamine/glutamic acid
glycine
histidine
isoleucine
leucine
lysine
phenylalanine
proline
serine
thronine
tryptophan
tyrosine
valine

all essential amino acids, especially for building muscle...

also, 176 grams of mostly clean carbs per serving, 1000 mgs of potassium and 1060 calories

I wouldn't use it if it didn't work.... I have trouble eating enough calories and shit to gain weight as my job is super physical, and I lift weights on top of that... I was actually losing muscle before I started using this shit, I'm up to like 5000+ calories, still lean, and finally putting on mass again... I've been using this stuff for about a month now, and the results are definitely real.

I couldn't eat enough food in a day to reach the right caloric intake I need, due to time constraints, and the fact I simply can't fit that much meat, potatoes and noodles in my stomach without feeling super bloated and lazy.

And I'm telling you, it tastes fucking awesome in coffee... the bitterness of the coffee kinda equals out the sweetness of the weight gainer, which I find to be a bit much... I don't use a full serving before a workout, roughly  half, a full serving would be too thick I think for a single cup of coffee.

I do agree though, actual food is the best way to go for sure... but whey/weight gainer make a perfectly fine supplement, not a replacement.

I'll agree with you here to... A lot of people eat way too much protein then they need... but calling protein 'shit' and un-healthy, is a joke.

I'm not on steroids, but I'm getting close to breaking 200 pounds, and I'd like to keep it that way... abundance of protein is absolutely essential in my case.... for absolute survival, no... but for gaining lean muscle mass and/or keeping it, especially with a job as physical as mine, yes, it is indeed needed... along with clean carbs and fat.

Nope, not gonna try to prove you wrong, because I believe you are correct.  People in the US are taught that you need "a lot of protein" and that your only source of protein is "meat and eggs" and that with out a lot of meat and eggs, you will die a slow and horrible death from malnutrition.

> but I'm getting close to breaking 200 pounds, and I'd like to keep it that way... abundance of protein is absolutely essential

What is "an abundance"?  If you are not active, and want to maintain, you need at most 75g of protein per day.  If you are a professional athlete, training every waking minute (literally), then you might need as much as 140g per day.  If you are an armature athlete, training for up to 5 hours per day, then you need no more than 110g per day.  These numbers are based upon your weight of 200lb.

A single cup of tempeh has 41g of protein.  A 6oz broiled steak has 38g of protein, but also has 18g of fat which includes 75% (4g) of your daily allowed saturated fat.

Well fuck, I think you guys are right. Every bodybuilder has been lying to me! :crankey:

Suess, I weigh about 185 pounds of lean mass, and I ingest around 200 or more grams of protein a day. Does it make sense to do this when you are running intense caloric deficits/ketotonic diets to prevent muscle degradation and as an extra source of lean energy?

Re: my new pre-workout/morning coffee [Re: LuSiD9]

i totally agree with Uzziel and Seuss.. i've read articles trying to support excess needs for protein consumption, but when you consider the actual requirements established by the NIH and CDC the amounts are quite a bit less then many people realize. not only quite a bit, a lot a bit... i did the calculations last night for shits and giggles when i first saw this debate start up and i base it on 300 grams of daily protein, 6 day work out schedule and figured a body builder should theoretically add 145 lbs of body mass if the individual completely used all the protein for muscle gain per year...

of course protein is used to repair and build the muscle, but even the best, optimally trained athlete may only be able to gain 12 pounds of muscle each training year... one of my doctors told me about one percent of the proteins we eat are used for energy production... the levels already established by the NIH and CDC cover normal cell repair. so let's say a body builder consumes 300 grams of protein a day(and that's low compared to some of the people i knew) one percent of that is 3 grams for energy, the NIH and CDC call for 55-70 grams of protein each day. that's 73 grams which leaves 227 grams for cell repair and growth... by consuming 227 grams a body builder should theoretically add 8 ounces of mass a day if the protein is used completely. there's something wrong with this picture...

and body builder should consume alot of water to help the kidneys process their piss, because that's where all of the excess protein is going, right down into the toilet unless the excess is precessed into fat, which is probably the case because just about all the body builders i've known carry quite a bit of fat, very few trained cut. it's impossible to gain 5 pounds of muscle in a month that some people claim, as i've already pointed out, yet builders get all excited when they gain weight. why do competitive body builders go into a fat burning stage before competition? for definition... there not loosing muscle during this loss, they're trying their hardest to lose the fat they've gained.

just a few weeks ago one of my doctors told me to reduce my intake to 110 grams per day and told me that was more then enough, so i trust him. he set it that high because he knows i eat a good amount mixed beans, nuts and soy products every day... he knows i run between 2-3 miles every day and lift 2-3 times a week... sure, i'm not a body builder, but does a BB require 227 additional grams a day? i don't believe so...

Obviously it was just an example of good foods to eat that has good carbs / high quality fats and proteins along with TONS of vitamins. Weight gainers? Don't make me laugh. It's a bunch of fucking junk. You think it's healthy eating that shit? Why don't you do some REAL research and come back and tell me why eating 1000 calories of unnecessary junk is good for you. "Oh but it's got all the essential proteins in it!" Yeah well so does a fucking egg, oh but an egg has biotin, choline, vitamin b12, zinc and so much more. Really. If you need more calories in the day, you should eat nuts, avocados, and other fatty foods for those extra calories, if you can't make the extra calories, you probably shouldn't be even trying to get bigger. So you're overworking your body, you lose muscle, and your reaction is to take more calories. Healthy fats will do you a world of good compared to that shit. Your body probably only gets 500-700 calories out of that 1000 calories, probably not even that. It does a lot more work breaking that shit down and trying to get it into fat. Your body doesn't like getting amassed with calories either. You get MORE out of eating LESS of healthy fats, but this concept might be insane to you.

I really don't see how you need 5000+ calories a day unless you're trying to become a fucking superman. In that case, I mean go ahead and eat whatever. If you can't compensate your job and lifting weights... maybe you should be doing one or the other?

You should look up the effects of excessive protein on a daily basis, for a long period of time. You might be surprised.

But y'know, don't take my advice or nothin'... I'm just a 140lb stick who sits behind his office :smirk:

No, you're wrong. You don't need more than 80-110 grams of protein a day unless you're the ronnie coleman of your weight class.

Absolutely essential? Bull fucking shit. It's good to see how brainwashed you really are by the body building community. Unless you are on steroids (which is a legit reason to double your protein consumption), excessive protein consumption is BAD for you. Yes, BAD. Go research excessive protein consumption over a long period of time. You'd be surprised, probably the exact opposite of what you think would happen if you had lots of protein to build a strong body.

Excess protein and carbs is simply converted to fat in the end anyways. with that, you are becoming completely inefficient and those precious calories you want so bad are just wasted trying to break down your protein and carbs to turn them into fat. It's actually a pretty high ratio of energy wasted too.

I hope you realize that your body does not need that much protein to rebuild your muscles. Most of the energy needed to rebuild comes from fats and carbs anyway, protein is pretty much just the building blocks.

Like I said again, prove me wrong with legit research, and I'll be glad to admit I am wrong because I want to know the truth too.
