Maintaining workout ambition
    #5873455 - 07/18/06 01:37 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror today and it really struck me how much my body has changed during the past six months.

I stopped working out with weights in December and it shows.  I have easily lost 10 pounds of muscle in that time period.  I have become scrawny and undefined.  The only thing that keeps me from looking completely terrible is the fact that I do pushups and pullups on a daily basis.

I need to start hitting the weights again.  But, I always get lazy and stop doing it.  Just when I start to get ripped and strong I start slacking off.  You know how it goes....other shit comes up or I would just rather sit on the computer.  What do you do to not get lazy?  How do you maintain your ambition?

I've found that it helps that I go to the gym straight from work. If I go home first, then I know I'll get lazy and sit in front of the TV or post on the shroomery. But if I drive straight to the gym, then there's nothing to do but work out. This is also a reason why I think it's better to have a gym membership than to work out at home.

I think of it this way, if I'm going to drag my ass in the gym today I might as well do it tomorrow and so fourth. If I miss a day of training I can take a whole 5 steps backwards and fuck the training I've done for the last week, now I'm playing catch-up. FUCK THAT.

It's not too hard once you're actually in the gym. For the past year I've taken between 1-3 puffs before getting in there and the endorphin rush is amazing. I love it. Even when I don't smoke I still get the best sense of euphoria. Maybe it's my attitude.... I know I'm getting enough oxygen too. I just get plain baked at the gym. I can't deny it.

This always gets me in the mood too. In fact, I'm headin off to the gym right now. Hopefully there's some nice booty to google at too!!

I've struggled with this issue, too.  Now I think about it the same way I think about brushing and flossing my teeth: non-negotiable.  If I want to keep my teeth, I must care for them every day.  If I want to keep my health and fitness, I must exercise every day.

When I want to stay in bed instead of going for my daily walk/run, I consider how tired I will feel without the energy boost I get from exercising.  I remind myself that inertia takes over as soon as I quit moving, and that I will continue to improve my health and appearance by working out every day.

When I want to skip my weight training workout, I just think about the ugly fact that humans lose 1% of their muscle mass every year after 30  without resistance exercise.   (Picture Jabba the Hut trying to fit into Princess Leia's gold bikini.  :puke:)

Ah you just gotta kick yourself in the ass. I think everyone who trains/workouts goes through these periods. You have to remind yourself that there will be days when you absolutley don't want to work out, but you just have to shake it off and go to the gym and giver. Once you're done, you'll have that great feeling because you just completed a full workout and you're one day closer to that health and body you've wanted.

I know in my case I can workout, workout, workout on a strict schedule but then I just implode and don't hit the gym for like a week. I'm just not in the mood. But then I get that feeling "Ah fuck! If I worked out all this week, I would've been 1 week ahead. Now I'm 1 week behind!" Ditto on the catch up theory posted above!

As for energy, I found something that works for me and will probably work for you. Usually I would hit the gym and then right after have a protein shake. Instead, have your protein shake about 15 minutes before the gym. And if you're really draggin on energy and motivation, slam down a redbull with your protein shake.

His body, not mine.

Ronnie Coleman eats like 800g of protein a day, and it's usually from red meat. The crazy bastard trains with almost all the weight he can lift, but keeps his rep range so high.... he's obviously not natural lol. He's got mad GH gut too, but it's still absolutely insane, drugs or not.

As far as motivation's concerned, do a few stretchs. Touch your toes and reach for the sky, take a huge breath too. Do this a few times and get the blood flowing. It's really rejuvenating, just don't let anyone see you or they'll think that you're a fagget.

Sometimes ya just gotta be a man lol. I've got some heavy squats to do after I finish this protein shake

I personally think that the main reason to workout is to be healthy. If you notice real results in your athletic abilities - strength, speed, agility (power) - you will know that it's worth it. Looking good is just a bi-product.

And honestly, the health benefits do not just include your body, but also your mind.

For me, I like to just think of being healthy as a part of life. I love it. I will go on walks, runs, swims, and work out. Basically, I just keep my eyes open and my head straight in order to define my goals on a daily basis and take advantage of oppurtunities to stay healthy and have fun doing it.

Right now, I am swimming most of all. I will run sometimes when I feel like it - just a half mile or so. I walk all over the place. And every now and then I will do a workout like chins, handstands, and pushups. I also like to practice jumping up to stuff and jumping off of stuff. Beleive me when I say that all of this, even walking, helps. You have to look at everything as a whole and realize that every moment is how you conduct yourself. You could be some 200 lbs dude who lifts weights all the time in a fight against some guy who walks around all day. If the guy who walks around handles his business better, remaining focused and powerfully formed, he could whoop the 200 lbs dude's ass. It is logic that will tell you what is the best thing to do. That turns into skill, which is waiting to be evolved through consistent, motivated effort.

That is why I don't bother lifting weights anymore. It's not necessary. Sure, it will make you big. However, the chances are that you will be slower, less agile, and in many ways less powerful than someone who knows how to operate because he works with his bodyweight - using effective kinetic chains that carry over to every aspect of his life.

I suggest that you check out www.bronzebowpublishing.com and www.dragondoor.com - both have given me some good ideas.

yep, alot of sugar in your diet can kill your desire to get motivated too
i try not to eat any sugar at all but being human sometimes i fall and the next day i'll feel sick and tired
you don't really notice that until you've purged your body of it tho
