chewing your food thoroughly and digestion
    #15467112 -

so, do yo make it a point to chew your food very thoroughly? sometimes i wonder how well the nutrients in food even gets absorbed if you just shovel it down while barely chewing it up.. i try to chew mine fairly good and swish it around with some saliva but sometimes i feel like i won't even be able to get enough food down if i don't swallow it relatively quickly

i was at a health seminar recently and the speaker suggested chewing each bite 50-100 times. doing this will allow for greater absorption, preserving your digestive enzymes, and allowing you to eat less food in general. one must practice i guess, haha!

i'm really curious how well food absorbs though if it's not chewed too thoroughly..

I feel like your food get's dissolved no matter what by acids in your stomach. Then again I am not a biologist.

Chewing more will certainly help you get full on less food though.

Yeah I try to count to at least twenty five chews before swallowing when I'm conscious of it, but that really varies on how much of a rush I'm in / the consistency of what I'm eating. I read somewhere that before you swallow you should chew up to fifty times!

Here's a little rule of thumb I like to live by:

Drink your food.  Chew your water.

You want to chew you food to the point where it is almost liquid and completely saturated with your saliva.  Also, when drinking water, you want to swish it around in your mouth a bit before swallowing so that it is mixed with your saliva.

one of my doctors told me to chew my food twenty times... 50-100 sounds ridiculous to me but if it works for you, do it... if i did that, considering the size of some of my salads i'd beat the dining room table for 3-4 hours... can you picture yourself counting to one hundred each fork full? talk about anal... and as far as injecting chi into my food by chewing 50 times and swishing it around in my in my mouth, that sounds pretty new age to me personally, but hey, if it works for him cool... little does he realize all food is considered an enemy to the colon, it always experiences very mild form of inflammation regardless what you eat... at least that's what a gastro doctor said in a lecture i watched her give on a berklee vid on Utube... some foods can be much more so then others for some people... look at colitis, crohn's disease, ibs to name a few... the odd thing she said though was that food played no role in these diseases... hmmmmm... maybe she's wrong about the colon...

chew to your hearts content fellows... i'll chew mine 20 times because that's all i really have time for...

one of the things my psychologist suggested i incorporate is reflection... a simple 10-15 minutes while lying down before i go to sleep... sometimes i'll think about the past or the days events... i thought about this thread a bit... it was wrong for me to say that there is no exchange of energy, because i already know there's energy in my food... it exchanges it's energy to me, why can't i exchange my energy to it... i do believe in chi power... i came to the conclusion that it was the thought of me chewing food 50 to 100 times to achieve this that set me off... please forgive me, both of you... i tried chewing my breakfast 100 times this morning and i just couldn't do it... after 3 mouthfuls it just got to me, i even tried 50 times and still the same thing... maybe it was counting in my mind that did it, only my subconscious really knows this answer... so i'll just chew my food alot and share as much energy that i can...

I have been more conscious of this recently.  I don't really chew carbs very well, most carbs can be reduced to nothing just by pushing them against the roof of your mouth... Meat though, I chew chew chew and chew some more.  I try to get it to a paste/liquid before I swallow.  As for sweets and junk food I try to savor each bite for as long as I can so I eat less, lol.

I chew quickly I suppose.  I guess it might take me 30 seconds to chew my food 50 times.  That's less than 2 bites per second so I guess it's not that fast. So I can eat 30 bites of food in 15 minutes chewing each bite 50 times.  I don't sit there and count to fifty when I'm chewing.  Once you do it a few times you'll know when it's time to swallow without having to count.

Also, I have a pretty big mouth so I take rather large bites.  I use both sides of my teeth so I can chew a lot of food at once.  I don't sit there looking like a chipmunk or anything but I dont take little girly bites either.

It was sorta gross when I first started cause I really didn't like the feeling of my food turning to mush inside my mouth but I guess since I know it's better for me the gross factor kinda went away and now I do it without thinking.

Interesting, i hadn't considered this from the nutrient absortion point of view. I inhale my food, and nearly swallow it whole.

I eat almost embarassingly fast, and also eat alot, and then sometimes feel really full.

I'll try and be conscious of this from now on, but we'll see - it will be a big change.

Ive known for a long time that i should eat slower, but never really gave it much thought.

Chewing is very important, especially depending on how complex the foods are that your eating...  Mastication is not only fun to say and talk about, it also initiates the digestion process. Also, enzymes in your mouth relay information to your stomach that prepares it (your belly) for digestion, depending on what is allegedly being chewed up in the mouth.

dude, that's awesome, and thanks for that video you posted. i know what you mean about it feeling gross at first

so does your brain kind of rewire after awhile too so you don't get full way too fast when chewing your food more thoroughly?

I was thinking about it and most carnivores don't chew their food.  On the other side of that most herbivores chew the shit out of it...  So, do we really need to be chewing food that many times?

Not necessarily.  I still get full around the same time whether I chew thoroughly or not.  I just know that I eat a lot less when I'm chewing well compared to when I used to inhale food.

your eating less because your brain has more time to receive the satiated signal... your taking your time to chew is causing you to eat less... don't believe me???? your brain signal biology is no different then owls or mine or anyone for that matter...

As far as chewing "50" times or whatever, I discovered this great method tonight while completely baked out of my mind... Chew constantly, every little bit add another scoop of food and swallow what is thoroughly chewed... Does that makes sense? kinda hard for me to write this tek down

Chew before you swallow. That's good advice.
As for counting the number of chews that sounds a little unnecessary.
Just chew it up good, and swallow.. simple as that.
Some things obviously like yogurt or chips and salsa can be practically inhaled.
But chew your steak and chew your bread. Swallowing big chunks of that stuff is rough on the gut, you'll live, but its obviously better to shred those chunks of fibrous or starchy morsels with yer chompers. Deliver it to your stomach in pulp form and your digestive faculties will run a lot smoother for sure.
I had an immobilized jaw for several weeks once. I ate nothing but blended food like smoothies and chili. Honestly didn't notice a huge difference between that and eating solid foods, digestion-wise.

Well, i just ate my first whole meal chewing very thoroughly. My girlfriend finished before me, and usually i finish at least 5 minutes before her. She commented that it was strange watching me chew so much, and indeed, it felt very strange sitting at the table for so long.

I am wondering if inhaling my food = improper digestion which lead to flatulance, which i have suffered from for a long time.

What do you think; eating fast = farts?
