Any Christians out there?
    #15435335 -

Hey guys, I know that a lot of people on these forums do not believe in an organized religion or a 'god' in the way that most religions teach. I totally understand the whole concept behind all being a part of the same sort of entity and that there is no actual god.

I am wondering, however, are there any Christians (or Muslims?) out there who have found that their experiences with psychedelics have actually led them to a believe in such a god as that of the bible? A friend of mine recently tried to argue with me that the god of the bible is completely compatible with a worldview which adopts the idea that everyone is really just a part of one big crazy interconnectedness.

Any insights?

I think that you'd better reference mysticism - Christian or otherwise. Christian mysticism departs from biblical myth into experiences of formless Presence, Light, and Sound (not 'words,' but Sound). Biblical stories are written as Hebrew midrash, (like the notion of Resurrection) which is the Hebrew correlate to Greek myth (like the notion of Incarnation). The Tenach is all about the former, the New Testament is all about the latter, and the Nag Hammadi library has Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and probably Iranian influences, and no evaluation of the NT should be considered without familiarity with the Nag Hammadi writings, beginning with the Gospel of Thomas. "The truth is out there."

While you're at it, you might as well compare and contrast the following categories of religious experience: Deism -Theism - Pantheism - Panentheism. I'll expect a paper on my desk, double-spaced, 8-10 pages, by Friday.

I think the classical Christian thought is a real polarization of what's widely attributed to psychedelic use (free thinking, openness, questioning everything).  I'm not saying they can't co-exist, however some of the very doctrine in the bible (can't think of references first hand, but I'm sure some generalizations come to mind) would counteract psychedelic culture and use.  So unless there's some real subjectivity in your religious views (though I suppose everyone's has some by nature), the stereotypical Abrahamic faith groups seem to oppose what many of us think psychedelics are all about.

Much of the early debate about whether biblical faith was consonant with psychedelic experience became polarized between the opponents, whose spokesperson was R.C. Zaehner. The pro-psychedelic person was probably Huston Smith, who participated in the Good Friday Experiment run by Walter Pahnke in 1962. Zaehner, who took mescaline, insisted that only pantheistic types of 'nature mysticism' were possible, but from what I remember, he did not consider the panentheistic stream of theological thought, only the theistic. So, if a personal theophany, consisting of mythic forms (or a visionary, St. Paul type), then for Zaehner (a staunch Catholic), psychedelics revealed nothing of the biblical God. I believe he was short-sighted, but mystical union (vs. communion) has a history of heresy behind it in Catholicism. Those mystics who spoke of such were often burned at the stake. Meister Eckhart - a very Advaita-like Catholic mystic would have gone to the stake at Cologne Cathedral had he not died first. Islamic mystics like al Hallaj, were executed for statements almost identical to Eckhart's. Blasphemy is an oft-repeated word re: Jesus, who also espoused mystical union with God. In Christianity, Jesus ALONE is credited with God-mysticism (union with God). He is deemed the unique specie of being capable of this because he alone is the unique Son. Mystics however, often see Jesus as the template for all human beings - animal and divine, physical and spiritual. Orthodoxy (as in Paul), only allows for Christ-mysticism, not God-mysticism. The Gospel of Thomas is the closest to God mysticism, but of course, that theology has never been orthodox.

Very interesting. I can see you are far more educated on the subject than I am.

I think I understand what you are saying about Christ-mysticism: only Christ is in actual with God (because he his God). However, I do  think that the 'perpetual union' of all life which so many psychedelic users prescribe to can be interpreted as a union between nature and man brought about by God. This is consistent with Biblical doctrine. For example, when I feel a sort of fascination at nature (tripping or not)and its complexities, I feel as if we are connected because we share the same essence of life itself. We are equally complicated. For this reason we are products of the same creator (as the bible teaches).

Not sure if I am making any sense but the more and more I analyze it the more I feel like nature is just our sister rather than our 'mother' and that the connection between the two comes not in an actual union but in a relational way. Like a cosmic family or something... I mean a family IS a union anyways if you think about it.

I will definitely have to read Thomas sometime I do not understand the actual theology presented in that Gospel.

I think you will see what you want to see, and interpret your changed perception as what you want to interpret it as.

This is the reason why a Hindu taking psychedelics probably won't see God/Jesus and vice versa.

It'd be like someone who never saw an apple, perceiving one while under the influence.

Our mind tries to discern pattern out of chaos, and when your perception is altered, the things you "see" are merely your mind trying to comprehend patterns while in a chaotic/confused state.

I think the feeling of connectedness is probably contributed to chemical changes in the brain, whether it be a release of serotonin or otherwise. These chemicals are known causers of feelings of empathy and connectedness.

Sorry that may have been an irrational gut response.

I just believe and have experienced much more going on than simply: 'probably contributed to chemical changes in the brain, whether it be a release of serotonin or otherwise. These chemicals are known causers of feelings of empathy and connectedness.'

What I am experiencing now are not feelings of connectedness.  It is the most intrusive communication and telepathy.  And energetic tethers to other people.  God's judgement come alive at the 'hands' of astral beings.  Its just much more involved.  They interface with our minds in a way that would probably put most into a state of collapse.  Mind control.  Its just very different than some describe.  And I don't think a context exists yet in allot of people's minds.  Probably better that way.

So in light of that^ what is believed around you has a huge impact on your mind and how it functions from what I've experienced.  Disbelief actually limits the function of your mind but belief causes a resonant field and you become a 'carrier' with energetic attachments feeding on your knowing.  The Mind flows from person to person.  And parts of your energetic body can be gobbled up by other people and these astral parasites or angels or what have you.

I wouldn't wish the experience on any of you.

Quote:
Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea.

I feel this^ has manifest and I am being punished.  It doesn't quite fit the model that its all happening locally inside the brain/mind.  Its as if its spread out over the community and due to some bad habits and a previously boastful attitude I am not accepted completely.

I feel its religious oppression.  And I sincerely feel that I really pissed off the Churches and ordinary Christians with my antics.  Telepathically.  The beings that seem like they don't quite know what they are doing keep claiming that I am Lucifer, that I am a Jesus imposter, that I'm an Alien, or the Beast.  Its ridiculous.  And they say that this is the sentiment of the surrounding people.  They want me to believe that I am the Sun/Son and its as if they are readying me for complete telepathy with the surrounding community.  Or granted me that privilege already and retracted it because I was too spooky when I told my story of death and rebirth.

In any case there at least exists a race of beings...  Call it a marvel of marvels.  An astral plane populated by these beings.  I think boredstiff posted about what he thought.  He was right IME.

I partially see myself as Christian. But not by the modern definition.
I don't read the bible, because the Catholic Church (among other corrupt authoritarians) have rewrote and mistranslated and revised it so many times that it is simply a modern manual of subservience.
I do not go to church, because I do not trust an institution based on tithing and the Bible to give me Truth. The world is my temple.
I think Christianity was based on a common Truth shared by many other world religions, and that the Truth has been obfuscated deliberately by those seeking control.
I have seen some miraculous events, and do pray every once in a while. But not to Jesus, for I believe Jesus was simply an enlightened individual.
Although I like to think he and I would get along pretty well.

In Genesis, mankind is given "dominion" over all over nature, but by-and-large, 'Christian' humankind has translated "dominion" as 'domination,' which is not the same thing. Mankind's hubris is to think of itself as superior to nature, and this has resulted in the horror of agri-farming, deforestation of the rain forests, strip-mining, earth, water and air pollution, over-population, inadequate water-treatment, epidemics, and virtually every other eco-disaster I can think of (like atomic reactor incidents at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukishima).

FishOilTheKid: I have a hard time imagining any of this to be true, and would require solid evidence to make an analysis.

If you think you have telepathy or anything like that James Randi has a million dollars if you can prove it.

This prize has been offered for decades, and so far not a single person has been able to claim it.

I'm a little out of it tonight, so please forgive me if I'm easily confused. :tongue2:
I'm not entirely sure what, exactly, the "common truth" is. I'm in a period of my life right now where I'm still trying to work out what to believe in.
There are many things that have been suppressed by the Church based on simple disagreements or the purpose of control, though. The Catholics massacred almost all Cathars in the early 1200's. One of the things that made Catharism unique, was that they believed the God of the Old Testament was not the True God, and was possibly Satan.
The Catholics also adopted many Pagan customs to win over new converts. Their inability to stick to a solid doctrine seems pretty dark to me.

As for my miracles...
One time when I was 11, my dad and I were coming home from work (he owned his own business, so I got the privilege of hanging out there and doing homework all day). We pulled up in front of the house and the door was wide open, some lights were on, and no car was in the driveway. My mother wasn't supposed to be home at that time, and the lack of a car in the driveway was pretty solid proof that we were being burglarized. We lived in a circular dead-end, so we parked on the street, leaving the driveway empty.
My dad pulled his gun out of his bag and told me to stay in the car. I was absolutely terrified. I watched him make his way up the driveway and into the open door of the house.
I did the only thing I could do: I prayed my prepubescent ass off, lowering my head beneath the level of the dash, covering my eyes, and pleading to God to fix the situation.
Several minutes passed like this, until I was startled by a knock on the window. My dad, looking bewildered and amused, was outside. Apparently (and hilariously) he had stormed the house and ended up holding my very surprised mom at gunpoint.
The first thing I noticed when I got out of the car was the presence of my mom's car in the driveway. She drove a burgundy pick-up truck then.
What the fuck? There was no way we both missed seeing that when we first pulled up.
And it is extremely unlikely that my dad walked right by it without noticing.
Miracle? I'm inclined to think so.

On your first point, I absolutely agree that the Catholic Church has definitely adopted many Pagan customs. The fact of the matter is, the God of the Old Testament is despicable. Literally killing or telling people to kill millions of people. Telling people to kill all of a culture except their young virgin women, of which are to be kept as slaves. Telling Abraham to kill his Son, and telling Jephthah to do the same. The God of the Old Testament is disgusting IMO.

As far as the miracle story, Im extremely skeptical of it. What was your mom's side of the story? There are a lot of things that could have been perceived one way or another, and there a lot of interesting studies that show how spotty human's memory recollection really is.

The day I believe a miracle is the day an amputee is healed, personally.

Absolutely. In fact, defining the Catholic Church in Christian terms, they are pretty much steeped in "evil." The sheer scale and wealth of their organization is very disheartening to me.
I think if God and Satan are indeed real beings, the God of the old testament is definitely the evil one. He's despicable!

I totally understand the skepticism. I'm honestly a little skeptical of it myself. We both could've been very focused on the light coming through the open door and not noticed the truck in the driveway or something similar. My doubt goes in both directions though, when I remember the wonder and confusion from the heat of the moment.
If it was a miracle, it was definitely some heavy reality-bending shit.

There was another instance a couple years ago, when I was at my deepest in my first real existential crisis. I was in a deep depression and was seriously considering suicide.
I was out at work in a neighboring state, and on my break I decided to walk to a local minimart. I had to walk across a long stretch of empty parking lot (state offices- closed on Saturday).
Walking back, I had a brief "lucid" moment in which I realized just how fucking beautiful this little grove of trees in the center of the parking lot was. I was so caught up in watching the branches gently sway in the breeze that I totally missed the little red Geo Metro cruising up to me.
The car pulled up right in front of me and the driver called out. Coming from a bad neighborhood, I was very wary of them. When a car pulls up that close in my neighborhood, they're either going to jump you and try to pay you for sex.
There were three people in the car: All three were caucasian. The driver was wearing one of those Mexican baja poncho things made out of hemp. The passenger a woman wearing some kind of sundress. And the guy in the back had long dreadlocks and was heavily tattooed. The two guys were somewhere in their mid-20's, and I guess the woman's age at mid-30's.
The driver told me that the Holy Spirit had told him to bring his friends and cruise the parking lot, because there would be a young man there who desperately needed a sign of His Presence.
They were exceedingly friendly and articulate, but I was still a little scared of them. I also thought they might try to sell me something or some such. Ha.
I told em they had the wrong guy and they disagreed, saying there wasn't anyone else in sight. They told me some stuff that sounded like it was from a Scripture, and offered to baptize me "By the Fire of the Spirit" right there in the parking lot.
Being socially awkward, depressed, and skittish, I refused. Told them some lie about how I already had a church and would rather be baptized by the preacher there.
The driver pulled out a painting he'd made and told me that he had painted it for me. That I was supposed to have it to have tangible proof of this encounter, and something with which to keep my faith strong. Inwardly, I thought it was kind of a ridiculous-looking thing. Very simple in style, bordering on childish.
I protested again, but eventually accepted the painting. Refused the baptism though. They then drove off without trying to rob me, shouting "God bless you man!" as they puttered away.

Later, I realized something. I didn't go to church and mostly despised Christians because I couldn't relate to them. I figured they were too different from me, and fuck them and their sheep-like complacence.
(This was when I was very cynical and smoking a lot of weed. I identified myself as a "Stoner")
Then I came into contact with spiritual people who were "like me," and what did I do? I distrusted them! Felt threatened! It was a pretty interesting lesson to learn about myself.

Still have the painting. Haven't faced a depression of that magnitude since.

I mean, it totally could've been a coincidence. These guys could just cruise around and tell a bunch of random people the same story and give them a painting, just to try and convert them.
But to me, the timing was perfect. Sometimes I'm convinced it was a miracle, and sometimes I rationalize it away as mere chance.
But I still look at that uncomplicated painting of Blood and Fire every day. It makes me wonder.
