Confidence
    #15330252 -

Is there anything more to confidence than a lack of self-doubt in the moment?

I draw confidence from the fact that I see no reason why another person is in anyway better than myself (Nor am I any better than another). This is a stance I take due to the fact that I am not a very confident person, as my natural confidence was crushed at a young age. This being the case, I have had to learn how to be, or appear confident in social / professional situations. Self doubt is always there for me, even when I may appear outwardly confident, so for me personally, confidence is about being mindful of my self doubt but not letting it rule me.

Yes, because confidence applies to knowledge, which extends beyond the moment. You don't need self-doubt to self-correct, say, misnomers. But you do need the confidence that you're not only capable of relearning, but willing to admit that you were wrong, that being wrong is OK, and -- most importantly-- confidence that your Self is making progress.

For me it is being able to express what you are thinking or feeling in a given situation, without doubting it or trying to hide or change it.

It all boils down to self knowledge and acceptance.

I agree there is no reason why another person should be seen as better in the end run. To see extra importance in someone is to ignore what makes us all unimportant. And no one escapes that, truly. I feel for your struggle and wish you the best going forward.

How does knowledge extend beyond the moment? You mention confidence that you can relearn and correct errors, but what about confidence that there is a whole lot that is simply unknowable and that errors will always be made? Confidence in being imperfect and OK with it?

None of this is to say that you will stop learning or stop gaining insight. It's simply acknowledging that there is no perfect state where this ceases to be. And so a confidence in the continuing cycles of this very moment.

I agree for the most part. Creating an environment for yourself that allows you to be open in this way is IMO very important. Hiding aspects of ourselves seems to be one of the most harmful things we can do.

i like the sentiment.
but on an obvious level people are better than other people at all kinds of things, math, sport, writing, you name it...

can you clarify a bit further what kind of 'better' you are talking about? :strokebeard:

Is Einstein better at math than me? I can do math, I doubt his corpse can. Am I therefore better at math than Einstein? In the end IMO everyone is equal. Soon enough I'll be unable to do math.

Real confidence is going it alone.  Impressing people is for chumps.

you do exist. your 'right' to exist will depend mostly on what you do (kill some dudes and that right may be waived)

Well I disagree. Any idea of "better" is a temporary illusion that soon enough becomes "was better" in order to maintain the illusion. Creating that illusion or not changes nothing. But IMO it does make us feel inferior or superior which again is just a temporary illusion.

I don't really see it as a struggle, just life, and it comes from being over confident at a young age. When something challenges your self confidence you have two constructive options, you can find a way to bypass the challenge or learn to be confident in the face of that challenge.

Is there a difference between confidence and self confidence?
